Looking to buy a rebuilt 4.0L for a my TJ

I'm looking at replacing the motor on my 6 cyl TJ, does anyone have any recommendations for a place to get a decent rebuilt motor?

Checker + Autozone will resell rebuilts for around $1600, but that seems a little steep to me.

Anyone with experience in this area?

I'm located in Salt Lake City, if anyone knows of a good engine shop in that area...

They sell some motors for a little more than that. Check the link.

I was being quoted $1500-1700 locally for a rebuilt but there was also an additional $500 core. I know you get that $ back but still a big pain in the a**

I ended up finding one out of the same year wrangler at a salvage yard for $600 no core charge. I then traded my old engine (buyer knew it had a knock but wanted to rebuild it anyway) to make up some of the difference.

Ended up being around a real value of $300 including EVERYTHING to swap out a engine with 228k miles with a knock to a engine with just a hair over 90K and no knock.

My vote is to find a lower mileage used engine. Otherwise you quote wasn't too far off what a rebuilt is going for. Either way good luck!
