I'm regearing from 373 to 456 and considering installing a spartan locker up front. I have a Dana 30 27 spline, 4.0 with 5 speed. Is this locker strong enough for 33 tires? Has anyone had problems with this type of setup?
Yes it is plenty strong. I run an aussie which is very similar to the spartan and the lockright. You don't need to do it at the same time as the regear if you do go with a lunchbox and can be done in your garage/driveway with the right tools.
The D30 will be fine. I would however carry a spare set of front shafts. Or even better yet, get some upgraded chromo 27 spline shafts and carry your stockers as spares.
Stock shafts sometimes have a tendency to flex at the u-joint ears and spit caps out when under the added stress of a locker. Most don't notice it until it is too late and broken ear is clanking.
We need to stop breaking stuff before Rausch. I will be lugging my old spare 35 shafts out this year, hopefully sell them to someone who needs a spare set. Also bringing a set of 30s for spare.
I have an entire spare d30 sittin in my garage that I am swappin in for the gears. So yes I have everything. Missing a cap on one U joint on one shaft though.
That was my problem. I have a tendency to mash the gas when I feel like I'm getting caught up. Usually I can power through the sticking point. Try that with the wheels turned and bad things can happen to u-joints.
Good advice. I will go ahead and get the spartan locker for the front. I don't plan on going to any larger tires and I have better luck going slow most of the time when off roading. Life is a journey, not a destination.
