Making my TJ my own.

Well since I bought this thing (last week) I started working on it little by little. I started by taking the plastic end caps iff the front bumper.

Removed the crappy soft top in place of a Smittybuilt Extended top.

Mounted the fullsize spare with the matching tire on the rear, removed the backseat and unbolted the rear seatbelts (since they make this awful sound when the wind is blowing). Well tonight I went to a local autoparts store and picked up a can of the Duplicolor bedliner stuff. I had planned on painting the mirrors and the door handles but then this happened....

I plan on finishing the rest in the next few days then spray the original planned parts plus the bumpers and removing the chrome steps.

Any other suggestions or ideas that you guys have feel free to post them up, I thought about painting the headlight bezels but not too sure how they would look black. Oh and I will also be painting the fender flares.

Today I'm going to be painting my chrome mirrors black. I'm going to Lowes and buying duplicolor self etching primer (great on metals) and duplicolor trim paint (its not glossy or flat kinda in between). First ill sand it or scuff it with sand paper and then prime it then spray it black!

just thinking, maybe you should search the bedliner project and get some ideas before you go at trying to finish up your project. In your first picture you have over spray on your consoul front section. It is possible you could have a "happy ending" if you re-group now. one tip for you-- is that the entire floor needs to be sanded and cleaned for the material to stick.

Yeah, I wasn't planning on spraying the floor but then I got in the zone and went to town.. I did clean, scuff and wipe down the floor with acetone so I'll see how well it stuck this afternoon.

With that duplicolor I would do atleast three coats. The nice thing is while drying it is soap and water soluble, making overspray simple to clean up

Do the headlight bezels too. You'll be glad you did!

It's your TJ. Make it your own. Decals, lights, special mounts for spare tire, jacks, attractions to whatever, have fun. Most things can be undone but its your Jeep. Enjoy!

A little update. The duplicolor bedliner felt rubbery (like plastidip) once it was fully dry. I scuffed it some more and sprayed the Rustoleum brand bed liner over it. Not too sure if I want to go all the way up the wheel wells but time will tell.

This brand feels like linex/rhinoliner and dries 10x faster.

Also removed the chrome steps and painted the front and rear bumpers with the same rustoleum bedliner

Tomorrow's project will be painting the rear license plate bracket and fender flares.

Thank you, I think it rides quieter also. It's covered in sand and drool from the dogs but the floor cleans up nicely.

Looks great!
It's amazing how much of a difference a few cans of black paint can make, isn't it!
After I painted the flares on mine, a few co-workers thought I had traded up for a newer Jeep!

Nope, it's the back road up to the crest through Placitas. I took my pops with me on Christmas day, no one up there at all and the road had like 4" on frozen snow.

Do you have a trail map of that?

I don't but you can't miss it, I-25 North to the 2nd exit in Bernalillo, turn right (East) at the exit and just follow that road. After a few miles (7-8?) the pavement ends and that's the road that all the pics taken on. It will take you up the mountain and you will come out in a picnic area above the Ski lodge.

Looks good - I like the blacked-out rims too. What did you use for those?

I'll probably be doing a lot of the same things with bed liner/plasti-dip next summer when the weather's better.
