Found a steal on a tj. (I have a 2000). My tj is rusty and getting up there in miles. This tj I found is auto though. And I really would like to stay at a manual. Any thought or opinions?
My OPINION, auto takes the fun our of driving. Unless you do a lot of rock crawling stick to the stick. But everyone is different. I bought a auto xj before my Tj because it was original owner and immaculate. To top it off it was my girlfriends grandma so I knew it was babied and the only complaint I ever had was it was no fun to drive.
I honestly don't even understand why wrangler is made in auto. Our country is being destroyed by laziness. Now everything is auto even sports cars. Go to Europe and they still have mostly sticks.
I wanted a 2015 Rubi in stick and found only 3 within 75 miles of my house in New England. That's disgusting. Even for offroading and crawling, I'd rather have a stick. The abundance of autos just proves to me that 90% of people who are buying trucks, wranglers, and sportscars are posers.
I needed slush mats so I went to the Jeep dealership near my house after I bought my Rubi in NH to see if they had the mopar ones in stock. Told the guy I just bought this in NH and some blond sales girl pops up from behind her computer and says Oh why'd you buy it in NH? You should have bought it here!...I said I would have but you people refuse to order them in stick so you blew a guaranteed sale!
Her answer was well people buy them. Well not people like me who actually like driving.
There are several threads debating the merits of each and, obviously, to each his own. My only $.02 is this ... prior to buying my first jeep in '13, I had always been of the opinion that it's not a "real" jeep unless it had a stick. Christmas of '13 my wife gave me an off-road driving session up in WVA. I quickly learned just how beneficial an automatic was when truly going off-road/rock crawling and, consequently, lost my "not a real jeep if automatic" mentality.
I don't rock crawl and my off roading is pretty much limited to whatever fire roads get me to trailheads for mountain biking or camping. So my stick is still just fine. But it might be worth it to at least give an auto a try if you do a bunch of crawling.
Can you afford to wait? What I mean is, do you find a lot of TJs that are in good shape and at a good price in manual? Autos can always be converted, but rust and general problems are a huge headache.
I sometimes wish I had a manual, but there is comfort in knowing the Jeep itself mechanically sound.
I can wait but most tjs around here in good condition go for at least 5000, this one is 2600. I just love manual and I don't think I'd be content with auto but then again it is better shape and condition than my tj
I love my stick, but I think the arguement of auto for crawling can be forgotten if you make a hand throttle for your manual. I dont have one nor have I been crawling yet but seems as though itd be a lot easier if you just get/make a 40$ hand throttle.
Went to check out the auto jeep yesterday. I like the Jeep. don't like the transmission. So I am waiting to find a nice manual one for a decent price. I really want a tj. But most of what I find are yjs. Not sure how I feel about a yj.
I use to hate YJs but recently they have been warming up to me I still think front leaf springs was an idiotic idea. But other than that I am starting to like them. The next jeep I buy will be a cj8 scrambler when ever I find a clean one for under 12000
I just don't know if I want to stray from a tj. Tjs in my opinion are the best. And most beautiful.
