Manual trans question 2000 wrangler 5sp

When i shift into 4 gear there is is slight grind, this is the only gear it does it, it stays in there is just a slight grind. if i double clutch it it goes right in without grinding, or if i let of the gas and wait a few seconds, it will go right in with no grind, . if its the sycro, how difficult is this to do, or do i need a rebuildt transmission, or will sawdust work. there is 78000 miles on this 4 cyl jeep.
thanks, dennis

You have the ax-5. Many of them have issues with the gears going bad. I would start simple and change the fluid. As for the 6cly you have an nv3550, again change fluid 1st. The 3550 usually has issues on cold mornings and will be hard going into 1st gear, not sure on the 4th gear issues however. Worst case for both take them to a shop if the fluid change does not help.

Yep if the fresh gear lube doesn't help, you probably have a bad 4th gear synchronizer which means you have to get into the transmission to fix it. A very (!) good gear lube to try in your AX-5 (also works in the AX-15) is MT-90 from Redline which you can get from Summit Racing

I have a 1999 wrangler 4.0 not a 2000. Does that change what transmission?

Please, NO SAWDUST!

Try a flush then new fluid.
Sounds like the synchros are hanging up. The tapered cone gets crud built up on it, and it doesn't speed the gears up fast enough.
The alternative is take it all apart and clean it with a stiff brush. Or get a "rebuilt."

Flushing and filling isn't quite as effective as taking it apart, but it sure is easier.

To flush - jack it up so the rear wheels are off the ground.
Drain the fluid - let it drip until it stops dripping.
Put a pint or 2 of Kerosene in it.
Start the engine - LET IT IDLE - DO NOT REV IT.
GENTLY shift up through all the gears, - use the clutch - then shift back down. LET IT IDLE, DO NOT REV IT. Revving will not help clean it, but may do damage. Kerosene is a lubricant, but not a very good one. (Same as WD-40)

Shift up and down a second time.

Drain it ASAP - before the crud has a chance to settle.
Let it drain until it stops dripping.
Fill with the fluid the MANUFACTURER recommends.

Enjoy.

It does not fix broken internal parts, but it sure makes them work better.

Yes, Wrangler TJ with the 4.0L engine and 5-speed have the AX-15 transmission, 2000 and newer 5-speeds are the NV3550. Redline MT-90 is probably the most commonly recommended aftermarket gear lube for the AX-5 and AX-15 transmissions.
