Manual Transmission Fluid Change--Need Opinions!!

I have done extensive searching for an answer with very little luck. I am looking to change the fluid in my AX15 transmission and cannot find a suitable fluid. Members on most forums praise Red Line MT-90 which I like as well, however it is a GL4 fluid..which should be corrosive to the syncros.

The specs for the AX15 call for a 75w90 GL3 fluid, but finding a GL3 fluid has been like finding bin laden I picked up 3 qts of Pennzoil Syncromesh which covers some Chrysler req. However, it does not state the viscosity or GL rating. Is it ok to use Syncromesh? Thanks!

I just put Pennzoil Syncromesh in mine based on recommendations from ROF (Rubicon Owners Forum) It's been fine for 2 weeks.

You have a different transmission. The 2006 has a NSG370 Syncromesh is fine for yours

The OP has a AX-15. They do require different types of fluids.

To the OP...

The AX-15 has to say the least crappy sincro's. Syncromesh is not what you want to put in it.

You would be correct to run the MT-90 or MT-mtl.

The AX-15 are happy with the fluid and shift better. IT WILL NOT hurt the sincro's in the trans. The syncromesh mite. The ax-15 doesn't much like the syncromesh.

The Redline MT-90 is a 75W-90 GL-4 gear lube which meets the 75W-90 GL-3 spec for your AX-15 transmission. GL-4 is backwards compatible with GL-3. And even though the Synchromesh you bought may be ok in your AX-15, it technically doesn't meet the spec so I wouldn't run it if it were me.

I found an old service manual and it looks like my previous owner was using GL-5 75W-90. Is it safe to just change the fluid to the redline MT-90 or should I get the tranny flushed by a shop first?

A simple drain and refill will be fine, no need for a flush.

So is the 10w 30 synthetic just as good for the tranny as the MT-90? What is tranny change intervals? I do not do any deep water crossings.

I have an AX-15, and put Super Tech (Wal Mart) 10w30 engine oil in it. That was 25k miles ago, and I have not had any problems. It ran/shifted fine before the change at 105k miles, and it's fine at 130k miles (now). Just my $0.02
