Matching gears?

I got some D30 4.10 gears when I purchased an full rear axle. I just want to know if they are a match.

Are these a matching set or do I need another set? Any idea if they are stock gears. Gears are completely new to me.

Assuming they are a matched set, you just have to make sure they are cut properly for your low-pinion Dana 30. If they are out of an older Dana 30 like from a Cherokee that is a high-pinion design, they won't work since they are cut backwards from a low-pinion Dana 30.

You can tell by comparing the two ring gears... what's inside your Dana 30 and these gears to see if the teeth are aligned the same way.

The guy I purchased everything from had just upgraded the rear axle to a 44 and regeared the front 30 to match his new 4.56 gearing in his 2003 Sport. I have the full rear axle that has the 4.10 gearing and he said that the ring and pinion I showed above were out of the front. I can only assume they are a matched pair although I do not see a number that really matches the two gears up. This is my first try at gears so I am still new to it all.

If those are used gears, I would not install them. Used gears are much harder to set up because they have already been work hardened where they contact each other, and they would need to be set up so they meshed at the same exact locations as before. Many R&P installers will charge more to install used gears because they can take so much additional time to get set up properly.

I agree, but at the most they will just be noisy, not mechanically going to fail. If you are tedious you can get the wear pattern almost perfect and won't get any noise. Like Jery said, though, its better to start new. A budget is a budget though, and not everyone is on the same budget. You sometimes gotta do what you gotta do.

Yes they are used gears with about 35k on them. I will be doing the setup so I think I may just go get new ones. This will be my first gear experience so I want to put as many cards in my favor as I can. I just like to use whatever I have before I go out and buy something new, but only if it makes sense. Do you have a suggestion of what master install kit I should purchase? I have heard horror stories about some complete kits being less than complete.

Still take your time. Even with new gears, if anything is off, you will have noise or even breakage.
