Max Tire on Stock Wheel w/ Lift

I searched and couldn't quite find the answer for my situation.

My son and I bought a '98 Sahara last summer with the stock 15x7 aluminum wheels. The Jeep has what looks to be a 3-4" Zone Offroad lift.

He wants to put 33s on it but he's starting to get the picture on how much stuff costs. I suggested he upgrade the tires now and save up for wheels and 33s later, especially if he can find a good used set of tires to get him through this summer.

What's the biggest tire he can mount on the stock Jeep wheels with stock backspacing? Height shouldn't be a problem with the lift. Not a big time wheeler, mostly trails and beach when not back and forth to school and sports.

Thanks guys (and ladies)

Once you get to an 11.5" wide tire, it becomes wide enough that the factory wheel will position it very (too?) close to the lower rear spring perch. So the absolute biggest tire I'd run on factory wheels, no matter how tall the suspension lift, is a 32x11.50. Wider than that and you absolutely need aftermarket wheels that will have less backspacing to give the tire more clearance away from the rear lower spring perch.

If width is the issue, what about a 33x10.50 or 11.50?

Width is the issue with the factory wheel backspace and clearance at the rear spring perch, so a 33X10.50 will clear the same as a 31X10.50 on a factory wheel. As Jerry stated, 11.50 wide tire is getting very close to too wide for a factory wheel. The 33 will, however, rub the front lower control arm when turning sharp before the 31 inch tire will. That can be addressed by adjusting the steering stops. I chose to install wheel spacers, and ultimately aftermarket wheels with less (4") back space when I went to 32X11.50's.

I would probably do 10.50s anyway regardless of what tire height I chose. 11.50s are kind of an oddball size, at least that's what my tire guy tells me.

The reason I asked about 33s is 33x10.50s are actually cheaper than 32x10.50s.

I got it. Thanks, fellas.
