I have a chance to buy my roomates 2.5ltr jeep. 5 speed, has been sitting a while, has some rust, and a blown headgasket amongst a list of other mechanical maintenance needed. I offered him 1.5k and he said hed do it. Does this sound like a good deal?? Im new to jeeps. And how much is a head job if I do it myself?
Did the jeep over heat to cause the blown head gasket and what other problems does it have is it modified at all these questions need to be answered first a jeep that has a lot of issues could end up costing a lot of money and may not be worth it just depends.
It was close to over heating a couple times and he kept driving it. I replaced the coolant for him and everything seemed to be ok. When flushing the coolant, there was a good bit of oil in it. One night he said he heard a BANG and the jeep just turned off. Met him on the side of the highway and tried to get it running... but nothing. Got it home and I cant even turn the crank! Not sure how hard headjobs on these are.
Sounds like a bottom end problem. If it doesn't turn over at all (clockwise or counter clockwise) its probably seized due to a crank/rod/bearing type failure. The loud bang was probably a rod going through the side of the block.
Either way $1500 is a good deal even if you have to replace the motor
I wouldn't mind having a 4.0 in it. And now thinking about it, it is probably a rod blowing from the bottom end. That or the piston/cylinders are that far gone.
Rust is mainly cosmetic, nothing that can't be replaced
