I had a 97' Wrangler as my first vehicle back in high school...Loved that thing!. Moved to Oklahoma for vet school and left it back home for my Dad and it was sold about a year after I moved... Was a sad day when I found out! Been saving like crazy to get back into one.

I hope you find your Jeep. You'll know it when you do. I did. You have to drive it. You can't go off of an ad. If you have a Jeep club in your area, join and make friends. Someone in there would help you look your purchase over. I'd do it for anybody in my area.

Now, if I could only find that '72 VW bug I let go before I enlisted.

BOTH of those OK Craigslist ones are beautiful and much better deals than the stealership offering! I like the look of the white one a lot, but the black 60th is amazing and the d44 is a huge advantage. I bought my 98 sport 3 weeks ago for 5500... thought I got a smoking deal 180k miles but great condition. In those 3 weeks, I've already dropped about 2300.00 on a huge bumper, warn winch, seat covers, a set of lights, tires, wheels, etc almost all off Craigslist at great prices..... and I'm just getting started too! Next up is the axles and regearing 1525.00 and another 1500 for lockers.... then I have some body damage to repair. I love the project aspect, but I wish I could do it over.....

Axles and reg ear being the biggest items.

That said, I did get an amazing deal considering the maintenance records etc.... I just didn't factor in what I wanted to do with the jeep...... if the Original poster was T's a dd'er and won't off road it more than dirt roads, than pick whichever aesthetically appeals most.... if not, look long and hard at the black one as well :-)

lots of good advise here.

to the o.p.: look at LOTS of used wranglers before buying...when i say "look" i dont mean just read and review on-line ads, they can be deceptive....you need to actually go look at and drive these vehicles so that you can really appreciate and recognize a good deal on a used wrangler. beware of just reviewing ads.

if you want a Sahara be prepared to pay a tad more as the Sahara typically has a lot more content than say and X or a Sport and certainly more than an SE model.

Thata a terrible deal. I got the silverstone version plus the seller put on 31" goodyear wranglers new, and it was certified with about 110000 miles with 2 owners only, no accidents on carfax either. The guy wanted 6800$ and i offered. 6.5k $ cash. He agree.. Came with hard and soft top... Been driving it since summer with no issues.

High mileage is a broad term, what is high mileage to one persons opinion is not to another's!
That question depends on prior maintenance, has it been abused out of it's realm of design and logistical location, subject to rust or not.
If it was well maintained, not abused and originated in a warm dry climate like S California, S Arizona, S Texas, then realistically they may run out well over 200,000 mile.
The exception to that is where factory defects are applicable, example being 2005, 2006 OPDA possible engine failures! I would stay away from those two years!

For 9000 you can get a much newer with less miles, let me look and see if i can find some that are comparable.

I ran the VIN on this and it has 3.73 gears and the Dana 44 rear axle. That is what you want. Here is the specs.

Just an update for those of you who have been following: Went to see that white 2000 TJ on saturday... Saw it, drove it, fell in love with it... And bought it!

Got them to budge on price a little... Still probably paid a little too much for it but I really liked it and it was in great condition and it was a reputable, small used Jeep dealer so I felt comfortable after talking with some other Jeep owners in the area.. I've looked and drove probably 7 Jeeps in the past couple of months so don't worry I did not just jump on the first one I tried

Thanks for all of the help everyone! This girl is happy to be back on the Jeep train

Bought my 2000 TJ with 135K on it for $5500, been my DD for the past 4 years pushing 195K now. Haven't had anything really major, I will say I've had to replace 3 freeze plugs, which are a bitch. Radiator went, little tinker things go wrong but its fun to fix. But other than that its been great, proving my Fiance wrong everyday when she dubbed it a "Money Pit" when I first bought it...

I have an XJ and 2 ZJ's with 4.0's with over 200,000 on the clock, and my last wheeler had 355,000 (not a typo) on it and run great when I sold it. Maintainence and good oil is the key for long mileage, IMO

What oil you use in those 4.0's? Brand, grade, etc.?

Rotella 20w50 is all i use in any 4.0 I have had except for in my 4 banger YJ. Too thick.
The Rotella has nickel in it which helps keep the scratches filled in the cylinder walls, Ninda like leaded fuel was supposed to do. As of now, none of them use oil between changes either. Ask a diesel mechanic about Rotella, they will probably say the same thing.
I would not recommend the 20w50 in colder climates though.

The price of a car is what you feel like paying for it. I paid top dollar for the 2001 I recently bought. It's stock except for a few goodies and 31" tires. It's a 4 cylinder which would drop the price a bit and it has a hard top which adds to it. I went over the TJ very carefully and was surprised to see how good it was. Even the drive line and undercarriage looked brand new, not even any surface rust. The tub was pristine underneath as well. The mileage was 99,xxx and the inside looked like new too. I don't know how they managed to keep it so good over all. My wife loved the red color so that was it. I paid well above the blue book, a couple thousand over what one of this age and mileage but to me it was worth it. I'm still glad I did. Several guys I know have newer Jeeps that aren't as well kept. We don't to extreme rock work or hill climbing ours is mostly used to transport dead animals and rifles through the mountains of SE Oregon something the Jeep does well.
In the end it all depends on what you want to do with a vehicle and how much you're willing to spend. I've always been willing to spend over blue book for a machine in unusually good condition.

I've heard a lot of good things about Rotella. Ran it in my '98 GMC truck I sold to get my TJ. It does come in lighter weights right? I live in upstate NY. Thanks for your info.

Here in New England resale values on TJ's are very high, especially if they dont have any rust. Which most do...got to check the frame out very carefully.

300,000km on my 2001. No problems. Really happy to have a TJ, Can't imagine anything else. Check valve covers, rear main seal and rear output shaft for leaks (common) 6cyl ones go forever.

Price seems to depend on where you are. I got my 2000 Sport 4.0, 99k, for $8000 in June of 2011. So far it's cost me about $800 in repairs... two bad wheel cylinders and one bad CPS. Not excessive, but not cheap either... a bit more than a dollar a day in repairs. That doesn't count the tires, since I'm about to pop $800+ for a set; but that's a "wear-out" item.

Talking Never too much mileage

I purchased a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited from E-Bay with 124,000 miles for $ 8,600.00. Needed new tires soon but other than a good cleaning was in great condition. Front grill & hood had a little damage.
Purchased a few front clip items and one night I was "hit" by a "cow", according to the Sheriffs Accident Report.
Dark, raining, limited vision on an unlit gravel road. The "steer" was in the middle of the road, just over the top of the hill. Armored up bumpers saved the Jeep from much physical damage.
After having fixed the damaged, replaced the front clip, I decided to have something that NO ONE ELSE HAS.. I had the Jeep repainted to Electric Lime Green Pearl. Man does it look great.
All new rubber seals and upgraded wheels, (2010 Rubicon) now looks like a new Jeep. Now to me Worth about $ 24,000.00 One of a kind.. I love it.
