I've found a Jeep I want to buy. It's an 06 Rubicon, but it has 175000 miles on it. It has spent it's life towed behind a motorhome. I can't seem to find an answer to the question, does the odometer rack up mileage while being towed. I can't figure out how else it could have this many miles as a tow behind vehicle. I'm going to probably buy it no matter what the answer is. Just trying to figure it out. Thanks, Lee

I believe if it is towed with all 4 tires on the ground, the odometer will roll. I have seen many high mileage jeeps from behind a motorhome. Keep in mind that the only thing that doesn't have the miles on it is the motor. everything else will have the miles on it... bushings, suspension, bearings.... all took the high mileage abuse.

After a little research I was able to find that I am wrong. Miles do not add up with towing... that kind of irritates me how all those people could just flat out lie about all the miles their rig has accumulated as they claim being towed behind a motorhome. And I thought jeepers were supposed to be upstanding people who believe in karma and paying it forward. Im finding this to be less true than is made to believe all the time!

Nope, milage does not go up, even with 4 down.
As per the manual, transfer case in neutral and key one click forward to unlock the steering wheel.

I flat towed my TJ from Indiana to Idaho. The milage was exactly the same after 4 days of driving and pulling the Jeep.

The Jeep has been driven a lot.

No, mileage does NOT go up, only wear is tires. Our JK Sahara tows with engine off, flat on the ground. We also have towed other vehicles, the mileage does not go up even with our Chevy Equinox and the key being in the run position. If this owner is telling you that the mileage is going up from being towed then WALK AWAY, fast!!!

Whether or not the miles on the odometer will go up can be yes and no. If the key is left in the on position, the odometer will record towed miles. The speedo gear (or tone ring on a Rubi) is on the output shaft of the t-case and is turning if the rear wheels are no matter what gear the t-case is in. If the ignition is left in the off/unlocked position, the odometer will not record towed miles.

Your seller "may have" used a brake buddy which is a boxed portable auxiliary braking system that sits on the floor in front of the driver's seat and pushes on the brake pedal for towing. If he did, it's possible that he plugged that in to the power port on the dash which is only hot when the key is on, and that he just left the ignition on to get power. Without asking the seller about it, you probably won't have an answer.

Found a top in pristine condition. From what I understand I stole it at $800
