Multiple owners?

I'm looking into getting a TJ from the '00-'01 era. The few that I've seriously considered have all had 4-5 owners.

I've heard it said people buy themselves Jeeps and then discover they're not a "jeep person"; I've also heard people use them as a weekend vehicle. So it makes me wonder:

Is it typical for jeeps to have multiple owners? Does it hurt the resale value as much as it would the average car?

Thanks.

If the vehicle is mechanically sound, go for it. Try to get a carfax report on the Jeep. It is true, not everyone loves a Jeep. They are not the best on gas, can be noisy, need proper maintainence and not the best drive for long drives or commuter drives. But if you like the idea of driving one of the most capable vehicles available, willing to deal with not having a ton of power you will be fine. Since I have gotten a Jeep, I have noticed that the culture is simular to that of the Harley Davidson crowd. There is a sense of being part of a group. We wave to each other, have off-road trips dedicated to only Jeeps, not other makes of 4X4. And it is in my opinion the only cool convertable a straight guy can drive without moving up to the cost of a Viper. Let us know if you get it and post pics of the Jeep.

Jeff

Mine had 2 owners before I bought it..98 Sport. Noticed a lot of used vehicles with 5+ years tend to have 2-3 owners.

Mine had only one, a really old lady. It had pink stripes when i got it! But as long as it is mechanically sound and good Carfax report. I have known a lot of people just to have a Jeep a month or two, so i can see why it would have alot.

As long as the Jeep is in good condition and you check Carfax it will be fine.

As stated over all condition of the jeep would be what I look at, a long with a vin report. Granted anytime you buy a used jeep or any vehicle, you take a risk. Check it over, ask questions. If you don't feel good about it, no matter how good the deal is.. walk away.

It is all about doing your home work and being patient. We lucked out with a cherry, one owner on our '98, but then again I spent many months looking and chased only the cleanest ones out there. Obviously condition is the most important but having to 'read' how the Jeep had been used and cared for is much easier if you only have to look at a one owner history... they are out there!
Don't be afraid to spend a grand or so more than you may want to get a really clean used TJ particularly if it has low mileage, was gently used and in near stock condition...it may well save you more $ in the long run..poorly done lifts, suspension mods or whatever, may look cool but can bite you in the butt if you have to make them right after the purchase.
Good Luck..have fun.

its all true, i have owned alot of tjs, when i sell them alot of the people end up selling them in two months time, i just bought another in pa. i paid a couple of grand extra because of the real low miles, the 5spd. 4.0 black with grey int.w/half doors, it was what i like and it was complete stock. all the jeeps in fl. have a ton of miles and beat up, so if you find a good one buy it, dont worry about 4 owners!!

140,000+ mileage

Hey, I looking on getting myself a used Jeep Wrangler and my budget is kind of tight. Im looking on getting another 4L 5sp but with my money situation i can only seem to find ones which have 140,000+ mileage. Now I know over time engines of any kind can lose some of there power and just dont have the same capabilities as before, but do wranglers with 140,000+ mileage do that? or do they seem to stay young for longer? I am looking on doing some off roading for sure, but also using it as my daily driver...
thanks alot!

If you can, get one that has not been modified yet. Better chance that is has not been driven too hard. Also, if purchasing from a private party, look for things like Monster energy drink stickers or SRH or any of the other "Bro-Dude" type stickers. These vehicles have been owned by kids that usually don't really take care of their stuff and use them more for a bashing toy. Good luck.
