My DIY license plate bracket

I didn't like it under my LED tail lights and have always wanted it in the spare wheel. Instead of paying anywhere from $50-$100 I made my own out of 1" aluminum. It's my first attempt but I really like it. Just gotta figure out where to route my wire for license plate light.

Thanks guys, like I said its my first attempt so I'm sure the next one will be better. Good thing is the aluminum pice cost me about $3.

Anyone know where or how other Jeepers with these relocation kits are routing the power/ground?

Nice work.

As for wiring, just tap into the original feed, run the wire to the hinge side of the tailgate and run it through the hole that was used for the factory third brake light.
Run the wire through some split loom conduit. You can use those sticky zip ti mounts on the tailgate and inside of the tub to attach it and just make sure there is enough slack to open the gate... or you could find a tj in a junk yard and get the contact plates like it uses for the brake light.

That probably all sounds like a bunch of mixed up rambling but I promise you it is all clear in my head. If you lived near by I could meet you at Harbor Freight and we could have it all sorted out in about 10 minutes. lol

You had power and ground contacts for the 3rd brake light already run for you.

Tap into those for the light and then access the wires in the wheelwell and pick up the running light circuit instead of the brake light circuit.

This is a great idea. I still have the 3rd brake light, wiring and bracket. A

Thanks Black Magic. It took me longer to pull the wire off the 3rd brake light then it did to wire it up!

what plate light are you running?

I like it though, I'm getting ready to do the LED tails and have been trying to figure out what to do about the plate. Not fond of the $60 & $70 options..

I really like it!

So I thought the led light I had installed was pretty bright and ricerish so I wired up these "Lightnboltz" lights that I bought from eBay.

I guess I don't get it. I can't think of a better looking, out of the way, rugged license plate mount than the factory one. Although, the engineers must have been all worn out from designing that when they came up with that awful factory 3rd brake light.

I like the idea of the licence plate inside the spare. I allready have the bullet lights. How would I wire it up with also using the factory 3rd brake light??

Yup, all I did was cut the white wire from the where it connects to the harness for the brake signal and tapped into the running light signal. Took literally 5 minutes to wire it up since I had to dig through the attic for the 3rd brake light and pull the wiring out.

So I would have to run a seperate wire from the running lights? I can't just use the contacts on the tail gate? And splice in.

Yes, you use the contacts that are already there, no extra wire. Just cut the power wire in the wheel well and tap into the parking light wire.
