My fix for brake lights not working, 1997 TJ

I'm new here and did a search for a problem I had in the past where the brake lights don't work but the running lights work and the fuses are fine. I saw others that had the same problem but did not see my "fix".

Yes, sometimes it is the brake light switch, but other times it is the...

Hazard Light Switch

Yep. I don't know why but when I did a internet search I found one story that told of the hazard switch being the problem. He blew it out with air and sprayed WD-40 in there (which I didn't do).

Remembering this as I was working on my lights I just got fed up and flipped the hazard switch back-and-forth about twenty times and saw the turn lights on the dash start to come on (hazards hadn't worked either). A great deal of crud started to fly upwards as I was doing it. I then used my handy old wooden board to set against the brake pedal and "PRESTO!", my brake lights were working again.

I realize this won't work for everyone, but it might work for some. If/when I use my hazards I have to look again to make sure the brake lights are still working and wiggle the switch if they aren't.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but as I said, I did a search and found only answers that were brake light switch, wiring or bulbs.

Have a great day... RT

Thank-you very much for providing this valuable information. The brake lights stopped functioning in my 1999 Wrangler TJ and I was at a complete loss as to why after various troubleshooting. I checked the fuse, bulbs, and even replaced the stop light switch, but still to no avail.

Turning the hazard light rocker switch on-and-off several times solved the problem entirely!

This is definitely a quick-fix Wrangler owners should consider next time if their brake lights fail.

Thanks RT, checked the bulbs, fuses, replaced the switch then found your thread. W/D and a few back and forths and BAM brake lights work.

This trick worked for my 97' TJ today, my friend told me he almost ran into the back of me when he was following me earlier because my brake lights were out. I thought it was strange, because I had replaced the bulbs recently. Anyway, came home and looked up on the trusty wranglerforum for the same problem and this trick worked for me too. My hazard lights never worked by the way either. Moved them back and forth about 20 times, sprayed some penetrating oil in the switch, and walla! Success! Thanks for the post!

Thanks for the post! My jeep sits outside topless quite a bit and catches rain... I ran the hazard switch back and forth... sprayed in some WD40 and ran it back and forth about 50 times.

Lights work perfectly now!

Thanks for taking the time to post this fix!
