Hey Domeshots -

My '94 YJ has been getting me with gas for the last 16 years. I thought it was a fluke, but my Daughter's 95 used to spit all over her as well.

...only in a Jeep.

Mine doesn't but I know here in California all nozzles have a tight fitting vapor recovery system which can be an equal PITA

By your description, it seems that your gas tank doesn't suck, but rather your gas tank blows.

Sorry.

Do they have the "overfill/vapor capture" set up in VA? If it seems like it's blowing straight out of the tank, pull the gas cap assy (you'll need a torx driver) and check to ensure that the overflow tube didn't come loose and isn't kinked.

There is a problem with your filler neck area... i dont know exactley how it works but my old fiero used to do it to and they said it was a problem with the car not the pump... one of the reasons it ended up as a parts car

I found that if I put the hose in all the way it doesnt want to fill..., I have had the blow back only happen once on my TJ.

I dont think we have any overfill protection here in virginia they would rather you just waste your money spilling it. I have a decent torx set, so ill take it off and see if anything doesn't look right

Every time I fill my tank up to the top it pukes it all over the ground. The solution?......I never fill up anymore. I stop it at about 3/4 tank. Problem solved.

I seem to remember this being discussed back aways in late 2009 or early 2010. Try using the search function.

This is a very common issue...here in Ohio, my Jeep has no problems, however I noticed I had a lot of issues on the pumps in Illinois...those typically I couldn't even lock down the handle. As soon as I locked it, it would click off...even though I had less than 1/4 tank. I finally had to hold the handle and fill it by ear...letting go when it sounded like it was about to spew gas out. I'm thinking it depends on the nozzles the pumps in your state are required to have.

The nozzles have a lot to do with it. If I can actually hear the gas going into the filler neck then it will spew gas when full. If I take it to a station that has the bigger vapor recovery nozzle, I can't hear the fuel going in and I can top it off without being splashed.
If you don't have these you might try twisting the nozzle a little to the left and as someone above mentioned "listen".

DUDE - wtf this happened to me yesterday and I was like meh, screwed up pump. My mechanic was with me and goes - wow, never seen that before.

God damnit. The more I like this vehicle the more of a poorly designed POS it also seems to be at the same time.

I just SOLD my Camry to buy the Jeep!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course it was 1993 and actually had quite a few problems, probably could have ran it another 50k without putting much more cash into it though.

Also, don't get me wrong about the Jeep, but when you drop 10k+ on a car that is only 5 years old you don't expect weird shit like gas belching at you from the pump.

Whatever...not worried about it.

Can't blame it on poor engineering when most owners don't have a problem

...personally, I'd blame it on poor gas pump nozzle designs. I've NEVER had any problems anywhere here in Ohio. Illinois...whole nother ballgame. But none of them had that rubber vapor recovery flap or whatever it's used for.

Maybe you have a kinked vent hose as previously mentioned, you need to check the hoses from the tank to the filler hole. When you take the cap off to fill it up can you hear a whoosh of air escaping like the air is trapped inside?

I have had my 2002 since the day it came off the delivery truck at the dealer. Never had the problem you are describing.

My 2006 Rubicon LJ does this at some gas pumps. I think it is a combination of something wrong with my vent lines and certain gas pumps. I have chosen to use the listen and be patient approach.

The nozzel does have alot to do with it, in my 98 tj, when i go to here in canada a ultramar, i can put gas in slowly i haved to hold it at not even half way(the trigger or wtv) then i go to another one, and fills in fast, try filling up a full gas tank when ever gallon takes like 1 minute -_-

In the last few months mine has developed this problem.
I'm not one for standing there and babying the gas nozzle. So I end up wasting fuel on the ground and it gets everywhere, including on the gas cap. Then, the smell gets on shoes and hands, ends up in the Jeep.

There must be a solution to this problem. One of these days, I'm going to look into it.
I think it has something to do with the vent hole. Here in TN we have mud dobbers, I'll almost bet that one of the lil sunsabeeches plugged mine up.

It's not difficult to see if your line is kinked. Remove the gas cap. Remove the four surround screws on the fuel tank. Then, undo the four screws that hold the hose in (that surround the filler part). Remove the bezel and feel around. There should be a larger tube where the gas goes. Then there should be a smaller tube where your air escapes. Make sure it's not kinked between the frame and tank. You may also just need to pull it out slightly.

There are a ton of threads on this -

Gas filling overflow problem - JeepForum.com

That's a good one that will help.

If none of this seems to help (and you've tried multiple gas stations) then check out my fuel pump thread.

http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/how-...ter-52353.html

Check out step 14, this also could be your problem. The ping pong ball basically is getting stuck back and not backing the gas back properly. Might just need to adjust that spring.

When I bought mine, I actually had to hold down the handle halfway or it would shut off. Basically, it made filling up a pain in the ass. It made it even worse in NJ where its all full service and I would have to get out and do it myself like a douche. Ask if you have any questions. It's not a difficult job, but that white locking nut can be a PITA.

Wow Burton, thank you very much for your post! Good information!

I will go and toss a match down the hole right now and see if it's got a kink in it

My 06 LJ does it. It's hit or miss when it happens. Seems like it has something to do with the temperature at times and other times it seems like it's where I fill up.

I have no problems with it. I fill mine slowly though.
Then take the nozzle out and keep filling. for absolute full tank... Hopefully I'll have about eight Jerry cans soon.
