my home made tyre carrier

here is the tyre carrier i've made. i used a slam shut latch and sub axle.
I also made a replacement bumper which doubles as a towbar.

There are really 2 stages to this carrier. ONe for around town where the tyre sits nice and close to the tailgate, and 2 where you can bolt on 2 jerry can holders for camping.

Here is a rear shot with the jerry cans on

and from another angle

open

no tyre now

and now with no jerry can holders on

There you go

Now that is pretty damn cool! I love how you can just take the can holders off and cinch up the tire closer to the body. Is it just a regular door type latch that holds it closed?

the slam shut latch actually is a car door latch, it's called a bear claw slam shut latch or a rotary latch. These things will hold as tight as your car door, so no worries,

kind of hard to see in the pics but i've put a lever on the latch that releases the latch once pressed down.

this pic may help

blue print,

I've got 3D cad for it,
all detailed 2D drawings for it
and laser files as well.

And for those interested, you'll have to wait till i move to america in a years time, as shipping from australia would be a killer.

yes I welded it myself. ( believe it or not i'm an engieer who can weld/machine/fabricate) I've also made a front bumper which houses a warn 8274 high mount winch

I'd be happy to sell the CAD/drawings/and laser files to an american manufacturing company. Or they can offer me a job, would have to be in the san diego area as thats where my wife is from.

I've been trying to come up with an exceptable design for a tire carrier. I LOVE your idea for the door latch. The unit looks GREAT and I love the fact you can run jerry cans, or remove them if you don't need them.

The reason why I asked is because those welds look top notch.

I saw some welds saturday that I cringed at on some rigs. Chicken S**T welds if you know what I mean. What type of welder did you use on those?

What do you use to bend your tubing?
I've been drooling over the ones Harbor freight carries but I'm not sure how well they work.

Looks nice...my only criticism would be to lose that rear tow hook. Looks like a real 'grabber'! You could obviously use a shackle in the rear hitch.

that is the same sort of bender i used. however i did get a new die that fit the pipe better and doesnt deform it on the radius. The die was as much as the bender. My only complaint about the die, is how large the radius is. 190mm. The die was made from an australian company called dawn. Im sure you';ll have ones just as good if not better in the states.
