It was in 1986,I was in the military stationed near Sacramento.many of the GI's there were into Jeeping hot and heavy.I was a drag racer with a car I had before I enlisted.the 67 GTO was a car I had bought in high school.there was a huge meet at the drag strip that friday night,I needed a crew to help prepare the car.and to help push it in line.the deal was they'd help, but I had to go to a Jeep rally.the Goat felt it's oats and walked off with the trophy.turning 13.05 in the quarter mile.before I retired it,it turned in the 12's one time. well a deals a deal and I was in a jeep at 4am sunday morning. it took almost three hours to get where this rally was.we got there and the guys I was with took me to an older guy with greying hair,he was beside a jacked up jeep, with large tires on it.never had seen any thing like it.Bob ,this guy's never been to a rally, why don't you show him the ropes,he's a drag racer so he's damaged his brain-gee thanks.he held out his hand said his name said he was vice president of the club. a drag racer huh? yes I said. Bob said he once was a drag racer, too darn expensive for a few seconds of driving. ok I thought I'll be nice, but looking back he was right. Bob said you want to give me a hand with the exhaust? sure I said,it was pretty easy being the Jeep was raised up,he said rules say I gotta run a full exhaust system being that I'm in the mildly modified stock class. that means no internal engine mods. no strokers,no hot cams,no large carbs. but that doesn't mean I can't take what I have and make it run the best that it can.I looked through the exhaust and could see straight through ,he said the rules for his class said he had to drive it in. I looked at the header system he had made, said it's sounds like drag racing to me.he laughed. he took the stock doors off. took some kind of tube doors out the back that had steel plate welded on them. he told me if it rolls over you don't want any rocks punching you in the side. I looked up this Jeep looked like it had a roll cage out of a pro stocker.the meet started, the pure stock Jeeps were first, one looked like it just rolled off the dealership floor. Bob looked at it and said not reccomended. I didn't get but remained quiet.the course had rocks where the wheels on one side would go up coming to a turn.then later it would be the other side then a 4 wheels had to go over huge rocks. well the stock driver made it over the left hand rocks,I guess he could see to guage it better. it then came to the right handers he went in to fast and cut it too sharp,up up and over.the new Jeep lay on it's side. Bob looked at me and said "not reccomended, you don't take your daily driver that you have to depend on to get to work in to do this.come on let's get him down. a buch of guys ran out helped the guy out, and rocked the new Jeep down on it's wheels. I looked at it the door was bashed in to where it wouldn't open.it had landed right on a rock. after that the stock class was more carefull no more insidents.then came Bobs class he fired it up, a low rumble eruped,a lot of yeah's! and fists pumping insued. I walked up to the line saw, a guy with a stop watch at the top was a guy with a flag, you have to remember this was many years ago.Bob set the time to beat he was an old hand at this. he came in I told him he had the the time to beat,he said not bad for running on 5 cylinders part time.I got a bad plug.I'll have it ready for the final round. Final round he took it going away. instead of celebrating he was more worried that I have a good time. he said don't you go any where the unlimited modified class is coming up.I then saw my first Jeep with a Chevy 350,with 8 white stacks pointing straight up in the air. it had giant tires ,no fenders full roll cage with no doors no hood.just plain evil looking. it took off 4 wheels throwing mud rooster tails in the air, the noise was deafining,I use a helmit in my drag car so I didn't hear much of the noise. all in all it was a great day I met a really great bunch of people who went out of thier way to introduce thier sport.they didn't care that I didn't have a Jeep, just that I tell the fact when ever any one talked about it.Jeeping was big in California before it was any where else, now it has caught on all over, even in different countries, this sport is huge now.and I hope there is a lot of guys like Bob bringing new people in.
