Question my little brother is buying a 98 wrangler 2.4L or 2.5L what should i look for

Ok my little brother is buying a 98 wrangler 4 cyl from my sister boy friend he is selling it for 5,000. so my little brother is going to give 3,000 then make payment for the rest. Im not shore its a good deal, but anyways it has 115,000 mile on it, and may need a tune up. the only reason he buying this jeep because he can make payment on it. what else should I look for, befor he buys it. and is this a good price on what he going to pay.

I just picked up the same Jeep tonight for 2500 mine needs a new exhaust (500 bucks) and a new master cylinder for the brakes (200 bucks) KBB private party value has them at 3500-4500 value. So depending on what mods are done to it and the condition it might not be a bad deal. I kinda stole mine it has micky thompson rims and brand new tires aftermarket lights and brand new speakers/radio to give you an idea he was asking 5000 the jeep has 140,000 miles

Where do u live? Get under it and check for rust. Mine looked fine when I bought my 97' a year later I poked the frame where the lower control arm bracket is and the screwdriver went right through.

I'd just offer him the 3k and be done with it...the payment thing never works out and causes problems with family/friends. Repair issues will come up and your brother more than likely can't/won't want to pay any remaining payments because he was sold a jeep with a bad transfer case or whatever. Happens all the time.

Good thing is you know the guy so you can spend more time checking it out. I'd pull the plugs and check how they're burning, rent a compression tester, check for leaks and condition of all fluids, take it for a long drive (look for DW, eye on oil and temp gauges, listen for abnormal noises) ask for maintenance receipts...common sense stuff. After all that you should have a list of repairs that you can use to talk him down.

Hey timothy... I'm not too far from your area. From searching craigslist recently I bet there are some better deals out there. Might have to wait for them though.

Here's one I just found: 2000 JEEP WRANGLER. 4X4 .82K MILES.

I don't know why he says great gas mileage from what I read here though lol.

It's all relative.
Great gas mileage ...

I got my 99 2.5 with 87k miles for 5k. Its a great jeep I get a steady 18mpg mostly highway. If you realize it isn't a speed demon and can live with driving 70mph then it will be a great buy.

Mine is a 5 speed though. And although I don't mind it being slow I would NEVER own a 2.5l auto.

Seems high for a 4 cylinder. Full doors? hard top?

My 97 was 5K with 4.0 auto full doors both tops and 121K miles.
