My transmission is dying....

Well I went to a transmission shop because my gears are grinding. According to the shop they found water in the transmission oil, I changed it myself and didn't see water it was just black. They said my synchros are bad, my main drive shaft is done for, and a few other parts. The grand total is about $2,000 if I want OEM parts. My question is can it really be that much for those parts, I just saw on morris4x4 and the parts would be maybe $1,000 if that. Also would it be better to just go to a junk yard and get another transmission, maybe switch to an auto? Or should I just stick with what this one shop told me. I don't know about transmissions and I feel as though they may be taking advantage of me which is the least of things I would want. Would you all recommend I try and find another shop to see what they can get me? The least of things I want is going to the dealership also, I know I will be forever in debt with them. All the advice you guys give me is appreciated thanks a lot! I have an 02 manual transmission the NV3550 by the way

OEM parts for the NV transmissions are hard to come by because they are no longer in production and only a certain number of replacement parts are avalible That could be the reason for the high cost of parts. I would shop around for another estimate

New Venture is no longer in business.. If your going to do the junkyard thing, AX-15 Transmission. . Keep it manual, automatics are for Mall Crawlers.

Or competition rigs But really, automatics are actually quite handy on the trials as well as easy around town. As long as you have proper cooling, they work great for mudding, rock crawling, and daily driving. Not as fun as manual though

You've got that backwards. Off-road is the only time I wish I DID have an automatic..

If you switch to an automatic you will have to either add the extra wiring and run them to your automatic PCM (probably harder than a new harness), or you will have to get an automatic wiring harness. You could also just "trick" the PCM into thinking that it is in neutral all of the time but if you live in Cali like I do you will be throwing some codes and not be able to pass smog inspection. If you can find a used six speed that might also be a good option for you, the six speeds bolt right up and use the same flywheel and clutch. Something to think about.

Also I have seen used transmissions around anywhere from $200 to $500 so it is cheaper than rebuilding at least in your case of $2000. If you could do it yourself, which is probably the way I would go, you would get yourself some cool tools and still do the job for about $500-$700 depending on what you opt for here is a kit on quadratec for $400. Original Replacement Parts AX15MASKIT - Transmission Master Rebuild Kit with Gaskets & Seals for 88-99 Jeep® Vehicles with AX15 5 Speed Transmission - Quadratec even though it says 88-99 it should be the same. Someone can correct me if I am wrong though.

I just rebuilt my AX15 granny in my garage. Its a pain but it is doable. You will need a press, a service manual and take lice and notes of what came from where. Also there are videos on youtube that can help.

my "granny" is dead don't think she can be rebuilt, but my granddad was rebuilt with a new hip :P

I just rebuilt my ax15 the shop gave me a quote a little less than 750 here in Naples fl. Stuff down here is stupid expensive too. This included all new bearings and synchros. I tore down everything just to where I split the casing. Looked it over to see what it needs and let the guy do it for a few hundred in labor. Parts were about 400 with shipping. It's like new now

That would be perfect except I have a NV3550 lol the AX-15 was before my Jeeps days that would be awesome though thanks for the input!

I love mine too so I'm sticking with it it's way too much fun and an added bonus no one else can drive it unless they know stick and most of my friends don't so manual rocks!

That's cheaper than me well they said after all this it'll have a 1 year warranty and shell run awesome!

If we had junkyards with TJs out here and a 6 speed I'd get it but we don't

Here are the pictures of my transmission the oil was like that as they took it out not sure how it got like that I drained it a while back and it was black. I'm pointing out the grime or mud on the drive shaft and the synchros are supposed to be copper/ bronze looking?

Try Craigslist. I suppose it depends on where you live but out here in the Inland Empire there are Jeep parts everywhere on CL. Also here is a link to a master rebuild kit for your transmission on eBay. Authentic Mopar parts and only $400! That's the route I would take.

Yeah out here in west Texas it's a bunch of Hondas eww with their body slams and loud a** mufflers!!! I hate that buy for Jeep parts it's a rarity if I do find anything. I would do the kit myself but I just don't wanna mess up anything and have to pay more

Well to finish this on a good note I finally got my Jeep back today I really did miss her it'd been a month and a half but the transmission is quiet and shifts really smooth thanks for all the tips guys
