I stumbled across a 98 Wrangler Sahara with low miles (46k) on Craigslist (link here). The carfax was clean (no accidents, or weird stuff). Called the guy on the phone and he sounded kinda car-salesy (is that a word?) or maybe he was just overly happy about selling his jeep, not quite sure. He mentioned there is no body rust, some typical surface rust on underbelly (for being in new england). Something about typical small rattling from belts on a jeep thats almost 15 years old. This will be my first used car purchase and it's just overwhelming trying to make sure everything checks out so i don't get stuck with a pos. Does this Jeep look like something I should pursue further?
Looks clean to me for a Mass jeep.. 8900 is a bit high,, but I think all car prices are a bit high.. It looks like its never been off road, which is a very good thing.. No tub rust is good, but what does he say about salt corrosion on the suspension, axles, frame etc etc.. If you get it, it's time to change all fluids and filters, new spark plugs, new ignition wires, new battery, and pull off the throttle body, tear it down, and give it a good cleaning... Be prepared to rebuild your front driveshaft at around 60,000 miles, and your front axle u-joints at around 50,000 miles.. the front sway bar links soon as well. Don't let these regular maintenance items scare you off, if you're mechanically inclined at all, you can do all this for the price of parts... If I were looking for a very nice used jeep with an automatic, I'd be on it.. Good luck,,

Just recently purchased my first Jeep, also first used car for just over 9k. 2000 TJ, 5sp basic like yours. It was a bit daunting, but with a level head and a keen eye, you can make out very well. Good luck!
Few things, if you plan to go off road with it, see if it has the dana 44 rear axle, it will have a metal square fill plug. The weaker dana 35 has the round plastic fill plug.. also it appears the hard top was added. as it has soft uppers vs full hard doors. Check for frame rot, hit the frame with something metal, pull the carpet back check the floor boards, make sure the hvac controls work on ALL settings. with 46k on it may need the exhaust manifold replaced as they are known to crack. For the trans check the fluid color, should be redish/pink in color. And of course make sure the 4wd works.

since it's a decent drive (about an hour away), I asked him what the lowest he'd take cash and ended up getting him down to 7800 cash. I'm going to check it out tomorrow morning, i'm excited to enter the jeep world!!!!
