Need help with engine

Im new to the forum, so please bare with me lol. I have a 97 tj with a 4 banger, the engine has a broken piston in it and is knocking so all i want to do is swap it with another 4 cylinder. I can get a 91 4 cylinder from a YJ, what would I have to do to swap these engines, do i have to rip out the wiring harness and put in one from a 91 or will the 97 work with it, i know things changed from 91-97 but i havent been able to find anything about this. If you could help me it would be greatly appreciated

I wanna say that legally you can only swap the same year or newer engine into a vehicle due to emissions. Idk though.

That's only true in some states. Besides unless you tell the cops its an older motor they aren't going to be able to look at it and tell.

I think the inspection / emissions people will be able to tell. Unless your state doesn't have that.

How would they know? If you are using the original computer and they plug in the OBD II port to run emissions your VIN and all will all read the same. And replacing a 2.5 block with another 2.5 will look the same.

have to find out if the block/heads are the same size for those years. If they are, you'll still have all of your emmisions items just swap the short-block they call it. Block, crank, rods & pistons. Have your current head re-done and put it on the other bottom end. The only concern Im thinking is if you have a crank sensor on the 97? The timing may turn out to be controlled different.

What state are you in? Cali is really strict, here in Michigan there arn't inspections on anything. You could run open headers as long as you don't flaunt it and get a ticket for disturbing the peace.

I live in NC, this is my DD so im not looking to dump a hole lot of money in it. Im gonna lift it and set it up the way i like it. But i looked into the emissions laws and aparently if its a 96 and up it has to b the same year engine or newer, but thats just reading forums, ill have to call DMV or talk to an inspector. Thank you all for your help
