need help, with steering problem

I have a 2002 wrangler, I can't tell anything is wrong with the steering by driving it. but sitting still when I move the steering wheel it makes a loud popping noise, the tie rod ends feel tight and they have enough grease on them. I can't pinpoint where the noise is coming from. anyone have any thing like this to happen before, if so what was the cause for it. and thanks in advance for any info.

Steering box loose?
Track bar bushings worn or loose?
Ball joints? Maybe?

thanks for the reply, every thing looke and feels good and tight. but the popping noise sounds like an axle spline trying to climb over another spline and slipping off making a popping noise. thats the best way I can describe it. would the gear box make a noise like this if it was going bad?

I guess it 'could' make noises. I would suggest having someone turn the steering wheel back & forth while you crawl under the front of the Jeep and try to locate where the noise is coming from.

The steering box will pop if it's worn, engine off. The intermediate steering shaft will as well. There's a double D slip joint in it between the fire wall and the support bearing under the hood.
