Like they said in the movie Christine, "You can't polish a turd". That's what the 4 cyc is, a turd. There may be a few things you can do, the biggest is a re gear. At the end of the day, you still will not be happy. Go for broke, sell it and get what you want.
Welp if you're asking about your 2.5L equipped Jeep, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you have the factory axles which came under your 2.5 equipped Jeep, which will as sure as the sky is blue have 4.10's already in them. Swapping to Rubicon axles for gearing alone would be like swapping from decaf coffee to decaf coffee.
But yes, it's been skirted around here - gearing is the only way to make your 2.5 feel stronger. There really isn't anything you can do on most people's budget to actually make the engine produce more power. But swapping your gearsets from 4.10 to say 4.56 or 4.88 (there's 5.13 also but I don't think the Dana 35 will accept those) will make it feel slightly more powerful.
You gotta figure a decent chunk of change, probably a four figure number, to swap out front and rear gear sets. And you gotta ask yourself "is it really worth it?" and chances are, it really isn't.
Just work on being more patient and enjoy your snail and all the places it can take you.
Bad news!!! I had a SE too, lifted 4", with 33" tires, nice looking, but even with 4.56 gears, the 2.4l engine combined with the infamous 42rle tranny made me buy another X tj, this time with the inline 6 and the nv3550
^^^^^ 4.56 is nowhere near enough gear for 33/2.4/42rle. 5.13's all the way.
A gear swap will make a big difference but, you can only expect so much dealing with a low HP/TQ engine. You are never going to be blasting down the hwy. As long as your expectations are realistic you will be fine.
