Need quick help,use a stop leak product???

Now I never use any of these stop leak products,ever.But,I have a days worth of driving on Sunday(now Friday night) and I did a check over of my Jeep and I have a little leak,just maybe 3 drops on my garage floor coming from the freeze plug,behind the intake/exhaust manifold.Is using something like Bars a bad idea? The stuff makes me a little hesitant.I dont want it to plug things up.So pls help.Ive even read of people using ground pepper???

I used the Bars Leak tablets in my daughter's jeep last December to stop a very slow leak that I never could find. (about a quart every couple of months) Since then it hasn't leaked a drop. They recommended 3 or 4 of the tablets, I only used 2. It probably has at least 8 or 9,000 miles on it since then with no problems at all. I would recommend the big tablets instead of the pellets, and never use any of them if you think you have some exhaust gas leaking into the coolant.

Was always told not to use them they can clump up and plug your system up then you have to flush your system out

I think what Im doing is Im going to pick up the alumaseal,not put it in yet.Along my trip Ill check the leak.If I need it Ill use it.

If the freeze plug needs to be replaced, then replace it. Welsh Plugs replacement Its actually not hard to do.

This is a bad idea. Especially if it is a freeze plug. Better get it hot and run it now or get a new one in there before you go. What if you are on the road, crankin the tunes, not watching the guages, and it leaks more then over heats and blows out the plug? Now you are into big mechanic fees in some small town.

Just sayin'.

Stop leak in a non-emergency situation is just not something I'd use. Finding the leak & fixing it is a better solution, stop leak can just cause future cooling system problems.

Most new cars come with stop leak in them. I like to use the bars leak that is the big dry pill looking one. It is basically like a wood pulp. It is what GM uses in the Northstar engines. It will not harm your cooling system or clog anything up. In my opinion it should be used in anything with a plastic radiator or heater core at all times. That is a accepted industry practice. As everyone should know that even the smallest leak in a cooling system causes the system to lose pressure significantly lowering the boiling point of the coolant.

Yep for emergency use, just like dealers sell spare tires.

If a cooling system is leaking, there is a problem. No automotive manufacturer is going to tolerate their OE manufacturers sending them parts like radiators or water pumps that leak. Well maybe the Italians would.

This product was called on for Cadillac dealer service departments to use on the HT4100, circa 1982. I can't remember the powertrain division techs name but I remember the quote "we're having to use this crap as a TSB claim repair on our flagship engine".

I have worked for a Cadillac dealer for over 15 years, the ht4100 and North Star were both junk, that is why gm sells crap to stop head gaskets from leaking.

Ha, I remember that engine... intake manifold gasket problems, weak aluminum block problems, bad oil pumps, stripped out bolt holes in the aluminum block. A wonderful 80's triumph of GM eighties engineering. Coolant leaks were nearly a minor issue with that engine when compared to its other issues.

The current Motorcraft Cooling System Stop Leak Pellets, service part number VC-6, used in both Production and Service, cause the yellow-colored Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant to change color ranging from a light golden brown to dark brown, depending upon the amount of pellet material in the coolant reservoir. This discoloration does not adversely affect the coolant or the vehicle's cooling system components. No repairs are required for this condition. To avoid confusion with regard to coolant contamination, a new formulation of stop leak pellets will be implemented in Production and Service in the near future.

Guess that I just do not know what I am talking about. I have provided the stop leak part numbers for the big 3.

Now can anyone show where a manufacture says not to use stop leak?

Just because they don't say you shouldn't use it doesn't mean its fine to use... I'm sure they say nothing about shooting a few 12 gauge slugs into the block, but we all know that wouldn't be the best idea.

I just want to clearify that I would normally fix the leak & not use a stop leak,but as I mentioned in my first post Its a situation that I have to drive the vehicle,no time ti fix it properly.
NJO,I AM going to replace the plug.I just dont have the time before I have to drive it (tomorrow).And yes its a pretty easy repair that I know how to do.Last year I replaced the ones that are between the engine & trans.
Im hopeful its not goin to be a prob.I noticed prob 3 drops on my garage floor,over a weeks time.Ill stop periodically along the trip to check it.I really have no other option.

Well I just got home without any problems.I had a little bit of leakage but nothing too bad.And I didnt need to use any stopleak.Now I can fix it properly.

Don't use stop leak stuff. Period. Just don't. Yes. You will clog things up/ make more trouble for yourself in the long run.
