Let's preface this by saying my TJ is a DD w/a 80m RT daily commute to the office. Do some mild trails on occasion, offroading around hunting lease, and the occasional mud outing. And I'll also state the obvious...I'm looking to keep both the LIFT itself, and the COST - ergo BB - reasonable, which is why I went w/ a BB instead of a coil setup. Although I'd much prefer a true suspension lift/upgrade.
The rig that is getting the lift is a fully stock MT 04 Sahara that came stock with Rubi springs (per MOPAR part#s anyway).
NEway, I just rec'd my 3" BB poly spacer lift from Fat Bob's Garage. It came with 4 - 2" spacers, 4 - 1" spacers, and rear bump stop extensions (so the stock retainer cup can still be used). -------------->
Which brings me to question.....does anybody have any experience (1 or 2 hand) regarding the successful or unsuccessful use of the 3" BB. And, if used, are there any issues or problems it may present, i.e ride, drive, performance, instability, etc.
I have experience using a 2" Daystar BB w/new Rubi springs I used in combo to lift my 98 TJ and was VERY pleased with this setup. Gave me almost 3" of lift w/a great ride.
Bill @ Fatbob's assured that he's sold tons of these with great reviews and only had one complaint from a guy who included the factory coil spacer in his install which caused some type of unk problem.
Sorry for writing a book but figured I could eliminate lots of peripheral posts if I give some details up front. Look forward to everyone's input - Thanks in advance!
I have a 2 in BB with no problems, but I don't understand what you are talking about when you say he left the factory coil spacer in?? Are you talking about a 3 in Body lift?? I know that daystar makes body lifts, but I haven't seen any of their budget boosts. Also I could see what you are saying about leaving the factory spacer in if it was a body lift, but not a coil spacer. If it's a 3 in BL stay away!! Buy a 2 in BB and then put on a 1 in BL and get the same clearance for not a lot more money and you will be a lot safer and look a lot better!!
The factory coil spacer is that skinny little rubber spacer/pad that is b/w the body and the coil in the factory setup. When most people do the 2" spacer they will still use the little 1/4" rubber spacer also. No way do I want a 3" or even a 2" BL.
This particular BB is 3" of poly coil spacer just like any other BB, only 3".
Are you saying between the spring and the spring perch?? The coil doesn't touch the body?? Sorry I am not trying to come off smart, just not understanding what you are saying!!
100 AGREE! TELL ME WHERE! I've checked around a few places (4WHL PARTS and the like) and they seem to hoover around $300+ and then S&H charges. BUT, the 3" BB w/new ES3000 shocks will run me $265.
I would much prefer coil lift for sure. I was looking at a Teraflex 3" coil kit, Rusty's, and FullTraction. All reasonably priced (relatively speaking) and included all the needed extras but when all is said and done, add shocks, etc, would run me about $600+.
Yes, I know that's nothing compared to most Jeepers but my pockets don't run that deep and I have a 2 year old that seems to require lots of things like food and clothes for some stupid reason
well wih thtree inches of lift you may need a transfer case drop kit, or just some washers, you may also want some longer rear sway bar links, besides that you should be fine, and even those are only if you feel vibes or want more flex
I'm kinda anticipating doing a TC drop. Rather not, but no biggie. That doesn't worry me. Probably doing front discos and rear extensions but hoped to do that down the road.
I just had some buyers remorse on the 3" BB just b/c I don't know NEbody that has run it yet. I know the 2" BB is fine. I assume the 3" is also, but just don't know.
why a 3" BB lift and not a 2" bb lift and a 1" body lift?
At 3 inches your getting close (if not over) the area where your going to need a track bar relocators. Or your front wheels are going to be pretty far the side compared to the rear. Its not near as bad in a 2" lift.
Hate to disagree, but I did a 2" BB on my 98 TJ and changed out my old soft springs and added brand new stock HD Rubi coils and the ride actually improved quite a bit over stock.
Now regarding the 3" BB...who knows??? Ride may be okay, but stability?
Since it appear I'm the lone ranger regarding this 3" BB I guess I'll be the lab rat. Luckily the 3" (2"+1" spacers) can be adjusted, so if things get ugly I'll just pull the 1" and leave it at 2" and add the BL By next summer I'll have a 3.5 RE and do it right!
A BB doesnt come with new coils.. it just uses plastic(?) pucks that stay on top of the stock coils... It doesnt improve flex since the flex range remains the same as stock just now the control arms are angled even more so all they do is hit the frame harder (because of short arms). The only thing that may help with confort is if you get good shocks.
Jherrin you havent heard any negatives on 3" pucks lift because i dont think any one runs it At least in my past 8 months or so of being here.. i've never seen any one running 3" pucks.
I say get the Full Traction 3" suspension lift with a 1" body lift and 1" motor mounts which will run you about 850 bucks. I think you will be much happier in the long run with a proper kit. Save a few bucks now and get the better kits.
Just my .02 worth.
Oh, and 3 inch pucks just does not sound safe!! Two inch pucks and a 1 inch body lift is a little safer.
Plus the 3" full traction kit can be used with the full traction long arm kit down the road, so that leaves you some flexiblitly. Also this is the set up i run and I do not have a TC drop or an SYE. I will in the next few months be installing an SYE and new driveshaft so I can go to a belly up set up by next summer.
Do you think you avoided the vibes b/c of the MML/BL? Or just lucky. Seems like everybody I TT has different opinion as to whether a 3" SL will produce any vibes. Guess there are so many drive train combinations that it is just a crap shoot. Was really wanting to keep the lift simple and still get 3" but seems like a pipe dream. I've come to grips with having to do either a TC drop or MML. Thanks for the helpful input.!
I completed my suspension lift and body lift and then test drove and shook all over the place. Then I put the motor mounts in and have very little vibes. I have also had a local 4WD store check out the drive shaft angles and they said everything was ok.
It is suggested by the companies that sell the motor mount lifts that you also do a 1" body lift that way your raditor shroud will line back up.
NOTE: Body lifts will have no effect on vibes. If you did a 3 inch body lift (which I highly don't recommend, because of all the hoses and lines that you have to extend) you will still not have the vibes because it does not effect your drive shaft angle. Only suspension lifts affect drive shaft angles.
