new gear ratio?

1) iv got a 97 tj 2.5 and in the summer i run 33" on it and iv got no power in 5th iv been told that the best way to fix that is to go to 4.88 in the diff is that correct?

2)will this be ok in the winter when im running my snow tires ill be using stock 15"

3) how will this effect my fuel milage

4) i havent got alot of extra cash to work with so id like to avoid buying everything new so is there any other vehicles i could pull 4.88 out of and it fit properly

First off, this is the JK section. I suggest posting in the TJ section to get more specific answers.

I don't know much of TJ gearing/engine/trans pairing but 4.56 or 4.88 should bring you up to stock levels, so it shouldn't negatively affect your MPG.

As far is parts, you can definitely use 2nd hand but it needs to be specific to a TJ like yours. You would just have to look for irregular wear patterns and what not.

Mine is in the shop right now getting 4.56. It has the 4.0 / 5 speed. That is what was recomended to me. 4.88 for 35" tires. I'm not sure if the 4 banger will make a differance on gearing. MPG shouldn't be much worse. Better to just buy a new set of gears and be done. Mine was gutless in 5th and 4th wasn't much better, hope this cures it
