New Jeep Owner need wheel & tire help

I have recently purchased a 2001 Jeep Wrangler and am clueless at best! I want to start my customizing with wheels and tires but don't know where to begin. The vehicle will mainly be used for street riding with occasional light trails and beaches. I'm wanting some matte black wheels and the largest tires possible without adjusting suspension. Any advice?

31x10.5 tire...I would recommend a Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac.

Just went through the tire thing. About the best without suspension mods, as mentioned, is a 31x10.5. I learned you do NOT want a mud tire. Mud tires are designed to dig; you don't want that in sand.

I did Firestone Destination ATs. Price was excellent. Much cheaper than the others, thanks to Ford destroying their reputation more than a decade ago. Quiet, good in wet, great in sand. I couldn't be happier.

PowerTrax no-slip in the front differential would be highly recommended too. You could do rear as well, but start with the front

Be patient, take your time with this decision. Tires are generally more expensive than wheels and if you sink $200+ per tire for a decent 31x10.50 tire), thinking you don't need a lift, only to find a few months down the road that you wish you had a lift, you'll be sorry. Search the forum for pics of Jeeps with a less than 2" budget boost and 32x11.50 tires. I think you'll see that this makes the Jeep look "right", and the BB lift costs very little and will not change the ride.

It does...if you suggest a lift I'm good with that as many already have. I don't mind putting the money in, just want to do it right and not do anything unnecessary.

You should probably decide if you'll want to lift first. Without a lift - 31" tires max as previously posted. A good suggestion:

You must also consider rims. Backspacing is very important unless you buy good spacers which are pricey and most of the time illegal (check your laws) and probably not a good solution anyway.

My Jeep has the stock ravine rims (want to paint black to save $ plus they're alloy not steel) which I believe the widest you can go is 10.5" without rubbing supposedly (so 32x10.5 def won't work on stock rims)

I went through the same research. I don't want to mess with my suspension either but I'm choosing (still haven't actually done it yet) to just buy coil spacers (bb) that are 2" to replace my stock isolators so I get a 1.5" lift without touching anything else (this also cost less than $100) I will be putting 31 x10.5x15 tires on mine what's nice about that other than it actually fits stock jeeps is its an easier size than 32's or 33's to find used if you're cheap like me lol

With a lift - how much money you got?
Not that it grows on trees, but money isn't as much the issue. I just want to do it right and get all the components (wheels, tires and lift) that are compatible.

If you do the spacers will you need to also get shocks?

I saw a daystar kit that brought 4 1.75" spacers and said it did not require new shocks but also had the same kit that brought some and most 2" lift kits bring shocks. That being said I would imagine spacers less than 2" and less are okay with stock shocks. (A 2" spacer is technically 1.5" if you take out the isolators that are .5") So long story short if you replace your stock isolators with 2" spacers you get 1.5" lift which should be fine without swapping anything else. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty positive on this.)

Just for reference... I had the Daystar 1.75" kit with shocks and 31x10.50 tires (and 16" black soft 8s). This is how it looked:


I then put 32x11.50s on with the same lift (and silver 18" wheels). This is how it looked:



I then put a Teraflex 3" lift with the same tires and it looks like this:



I think you will be definately under-tired if you do a BB and stick with 31x10.50 tires

I kinda had the same issue since I just bought my jeep recently also. I finally decided on a 2" BDS suspension lift and 31x10.5 BF Goodrich AT's

Good deal. If you stick with 15" wheels, 32x11.50 tires are fairly inexpensive (as are the wheels).

I like my 18's, but bought them only because they were on close-out and a great deal. Didn't think about the tire price though... 18s are $$$

What wheels and tires are you running on this...love the look!

A great tire you don't hear about much is the Kelly Safari TSR

They are one of the best tires I have ever used. I have 40,000 miles on them right now and I bet I can get another 25,000 or so out of them.
They are basically the same tread pattern as the duratrac but a little cheaper, they lasted longer than my duratracs did, and their sidewall is a little thicker on them which I prefer.
The Kelly's are on my truck and on my jeep I have maxxis bighorns on it but I wouldn't suggest those for what you want out them they are excellent in mud but sand they are worth it. But overall I would say to at least look into the kelly's

American racing rims look good I see them a lot I have them and ppl like them more than my 31 inch swampers

The wheels are ATX "Justice" wheels (made by American Racing). It's a discontinued line, but they're avail in the right offset and bolt pattern for the TJ on ebay for $700 for a set.
