New Jeeper - Scraping noise..HELP!!!

Hello all, just bought my first jeep on Monday(now friday)..98 TJ 2.5L 5spd 4x4, blah blah blah..anywho..

took it for a little jeep ride on wed, local state roads and a gravel/dirt county road..we managed to find a little mud hole and a bit of fun..

took off in it the next day, noticed a scraping noise coming from the front driver side area(i believe anyway) that appeared at about 20mph and would match acceleration speeds, not necessarily getting louder, but just increasing the rate at which it "scraped"..sounds like a scraping noise is the best I can describe it.. after I noticed this I took it to the car wash..and tried to pressure wash everything up out of the wheel assemblies..no difference

today i jacked the front up and checked for play in the tires..everything seemed to be in check..I did turn each wheel individually to see if the noise was present..noise was present on drivers side , but not on passenger's side..4wd seems to be working fine

any ideas..again I'm new to this jeep thing and off-roading so I'm not real sure whats going on but it does worry me..thanks guys

It should also be noted that the first time I noticed it was the first time I had zipped the window down..if the window is up you cant even notice it..

Check all around your brakes for a small rock wedged in there somewhere.

Thats kinda what I'm thinking/hoping for..I plan to take some stuff apart 2moro and clean it up better..but it doesnt get any worse or better if the wheels are turned, bumps, braking, nothing really changes it other than speed..soo IDK?

Could be the bearing hub assembly. Jack it up and remove the tire. Take a close look at the brake parts and see if the axles spins see if you can tell where the noise is. If you can't then take the caliper off and zip tie it out of the way and spin again. If it's still noisy you will need to keep going and take the bearing unit out and replace it. Good luck.

Hey guys thanks for the input..after looking around the brake assembly again..I found that I had a little play in the passenger side U-joint..so I got with my "jeep" buddy, who is also a mechanic in the Army..and he tore that thing down today and sure enough..u-joints were shot..so problem solved..i'm back on the road!

That's great news! Not so great that you had to replace joints, but great that you found it!

Another mystery solved!!
