New liner installed - Monstaliner

You've heard about Line-X, Rhino Liner, Herculiner, and U-Pol Raptor liner. I didn't choose any of those! A company that has been making automotive paints and coatings for about 85 years has a product that has been 5 years in the development.

MONSTALINER™ Do-It-Yourself Roll-On Truck Bed & Utility Liner

This stuff was first introduced to the Jeep world over on JeepForum, and I followed the comments, development, testing, and initial applications with a LOT of interest. I really didn't want to go with Herculiner. After seeing PDK's application, which is awesome, I just knew I didn't want that texture. It's too rough IMO. So I looked at U-Pol and Monstaliner. U-Pol can be sprayed on, but I don't have a compressor and PDK has his hands full with his TJ to have my TJ stay in his workshop. I didn't want to inconvenience him. So I thought I'd just do it in my garage, and that meant rolling. No biggie. It'll just take more time.

This thread is going to cover the interior teardown, prep, and application of Monstaliner. The thread over on JF is worth a read and is the basis for what I'm going to try and document. NO promises on a lot of pics unless I can get Dan to shoot em while I work.

I received the product less than 1 week after I ordered it and I was able to get in on the initial discounts offered on JF, so that was a bonus. Included in my kit were:

* 1 gallon of Monstaliner
* 1 quart of activator for the Monstaliner
* 1 quart of Chassis saver (part of promotion)
* 2 rollers
* Stir stick
* Tray
* Instructions

Packaging was very nice, secure, and quality.

I also picked up:

* MEK cleaner (from Home Depot)
* a breathing filter with carbon
* Gloves to protect from the MEK
* foam paint brushes (for the nooks and crannies)
* wide painter's tape
* Shop rags
* 60 grit sanding block
* 60 grit sand paper

My plan is to tear down the Jeep's interior, labeling all nuts/bolts and putting in baggies attached to the part they go to. Then I'll wash it all out well, then use some MEK cleaner to get rid of the carpet glue I had to use in back when I put this carpet in. With that out of the way, the sanding will commence and the part I really dread, but it is necessary to get this applied correctly. Once sanded, I'll wipe it all down with MEK again and let it dry. Then the application will begin.

I'll be using this opportunity to rerun some cable (stereo, speaker wires, iPod connector) when all is said and done too).

Okay here we go.

First things first - my carpet padding underneath was black - so it got tossed. And the quality of the carpet generally sucked anyway. I couldn't give this stuff away.

Next, Tuffy consoles are a PITA to get out! Guess that's the way it should be!

Third, I have a lot more stereo cable in this thing than I thought!

Now on to pics. First set is the scuffing. In a few places we got a bit thin, but that paint was already pretty thin and hard to avoid. This first set does not show ALL surfaces complete yet. I did the tailgate and Dan and I sanded the front yesterday morning. These were taken Saturday evening.













Next set is after hosing it out and before applying MEK. At this point, we were looking for areas that were still shiny with clear coat and hitting em with sandpaper.

And moving a Jeep w/o seats can be interesting. I can do it, with Home Depot's help!



These next shots are where we applied the Chassis Saver paint. Those problem areas that had bits of rust and a few areas where getting liner was going to be tough, we went ahead and dropped this paint down. It is very similar to POR-15.









We let that cure for about 4 hours (it was toasty in the garage) and it was dry to the touch, which meant that the liner could go ahead and go. If I let it set overnight, I would have had to scuff up that paint too - I had enough of that!

Now, here are the shots after dropping the first coat with the brushes and foam brushes and an application of liner with the roller. It looks very shiny, and it still is right now, but it was still wet when I shot these!

The hand brake mount had a good bit of rust - it is essentially a bowl that holds water. So I figured I may as well put the Chassis Saver in there too. I didn't care how pretty it was - it'll be covered by the Tuffy. But I wanted to protect it. It is NOT lined.

On the door jambs, I went from the tub rail all the way down and up to the base of the dashboard. Mine were looking pretty rough and scuffed up and I wanted to protect them. THEY will be getting additional coating as well since they get rubbed a lot. I will be retaping. I'll get pics of the next step of the process, but it should look a lot like what you've seen above. I will get pics of the final texture once it is applied and has dried for about an hour.

I am glad I pulled the tape off when I did. It would have been a REAL pain to get the tape off if I waited for this to dry first! After about 10 minutes it is so thick, it doesn't run at all.

I'm VERY impressed with this stuff. I'm glad Dan and Deb helped and I'm VERY glad I had lots of nitrile and latex gloves around. That chassis saver paint is STICKY STICKY STICKY! But we had enough MEK left to get it off our skin.

I can say, the texture is REALLY nice. Dan helped in some of the tight spots with a brush. Every area he did that, like in the water channels and joints between side/floor, I got as close as I could to make the texture consistent. No brush marks that I've been able to find other than those where I couldn't get the roller. Even the brush marks look textured with the 'faux finish' stipling he did. If you look on the tailgate photo, he stipled in the indented areas and I went behind and rolled a little bit to even out the texture. It is darn near impossible to see where he did the brush. Just the way it should be.

Already stripped the tape off and put some bolts back in - just cuz I could. I also put on my new license plate.

This morning about 15 hours after applying, I applied a VERY fine mist of water to the surfaces to help the curing process. It actually helps the curing to be humid/moist. My garage is pretty warm and humid right now with the rain in the area, but the water really helps it - I just didn't flood it.

I'll be watching the progression of curing. Curious to see how you like it.

Its #1 on my list right now (it just recently bumped UPOL off the top).

The curing so far is looking real good. I haven't touched it since finishing it on Monday other than to spritz it with the water bottle. It is ROCK solid at this point, but since I don't HAVE to drive it, I'm giving it about a week to really cure well. I'll be putting things back in over the weekend, starting with my wiring for the seats, speakers, and stereo stuff. Easier to lay that in and route before I put the console, seats, etc back in.

My wife wasn't sure about the whole process, but really liked the first coat (which I knew looked less than stellar). But when she saw the second thick coat, she noted how even it all was and how great it looked - and she is VERY picky about things like that.

Spritzing it today, I found a spot on my tailgate top hinge where I touched the paint. Probably too late to use MEK on it to get it off, but I'll try it later and see if it comes off. I want it off, but I'm HOPING not even MEK will get this stuff off once it is on there. THAT will say a lot.

What made you drop UPOL off the list? I dropped it for a simple reason: No air compressor availability and I'm notoriously messy with spraying things in the garage. I didn't want that burden, esp with my wife's car right next to it. That and the fumes/particulates in the air just didn't sit well with me. This gave me a chance to look things over very closely while working on it just like I do when I detail a car. With my son and wife helping, it wasn't bad at all.

I hope to have pics of the Jeep reassembled by Monday, but with finals and a huge project due next week for my Supply Chain class, who knows if I'll get to do much this weekend.

I'm hoping for some tuff stuff.

I also like how you went over the side rails...that's my plan as well.

Regarding the UPOL Well its #2.

I have a compressor, BUT. there were a few people on JF that said they had the UPOL and it wasn't that tough/thick...and so far everyone has said this stuff is insane.

I am very interested in this stuff! Let us know how it holds up. My only question about it is since is is more smooth, will it be slippery when wet?

Very nice writeup!! Let us know what it's like in the interior once you get it all back together. As in does it also offer a noticeable drop in exterior road noise passing up through the floor? This is something I am thinking about doing to my new TJ but I want some acoustic benefits too as well as the protection benefits.

Jerry will do. I'm hoping it will be a bit quieter, but with top/doors off, it'll be hard to tell. My carpet didn't seem to do much, but it wasn't factory carpet either.

Hensman, from everything I read before doing it, it actually grips quite well. I have not climbed into the Jeep yet other than to move it prior to lining it (reference home depot bucket pic). I'll find out shortly though! I'll be a bit upset if it isn't but I did NOT want the roughness of herculiner.

that turned out great... I wish I had more patience sanding mine... and found a good bed liner. its undercoating for now... maby sometime ill figure out how to get that out and redo it... untill then it works lol

Here are some of my finished install. I still have a few tidying up things to do with my amp and CB wiring, but I'll be doing that today, along with reinstalling the fire extinguishers and a few odds and ends.

My seats are by default spice, but the later shots have the seat covers on them.

I've found the challenge in all of this is not so much the prep and rolling, but putting everything back - remembering where screws came from and getting cable to be nice and neat. The stereo installer did a LOUSY job with the wiring, so that added about an hour to reassembly. I reran them, pulled some old wiring I don't use any more, and loomed like wires together and hid it behind the factory wiring that runs under the driver door. The installer had just zip-tied to the factory wiring and it looked terrible. I know it is only a Jeep, but that doesn't mean the install can't look professional. The amps look messy right now, but once the rest of the wire is loomed and secured, it'll look a LOT better.

It looks really nice. I am considering doing something similar and you can help me make up my mind. After this compound dries and the Jeep sits in the hot sun, does the material soften at all, or let off any type of chemical odor? I have seen some coatings like this that get rather soft in the hot sun. Thanks.

Honestly, I don't know yet. I've heard it doesn't soften up since there really isn't rubber in there. It is supposed to work just fine even with heated floorboards from the exhaust. Some folks on JF that have installed it reported it nice and solid after running on the highway. It was really warm, but still hard.

This weekend it sat out, but we had rain and tornadoes on Saturday. I had 3/4" of water in the floorboards (nothing reinstalled at that point), because I didn't have my cover on all the way. It got a good rinse though. heheh

As for odor, it isn't bad right now. When I took my cover off, there was a slight odor, but nothing major, but then again, I only have the safari on right now. I imagine it'd be a stronger odor with a top on. But the garage is back to normal after having the Jeep out of it for 2 days...

Screw that - I want new seats! I just haven't cleaned up the seat covers as well as they need to be cleaned - they sat in the garage in a pile the whole time they were out of the Jeep - guess I should have cleaned em huh? hehe

Most of them were in MS or south of Huntsville, so we dodged that one. I used to live in OK and had to deal with them there and in Texas. I have family up in Enid.

Thanks for the write-up. How is it holding up so far? Still like it? Any regrets? I just ordered a Tuffy console, and I'm thinking I'll probably go ahead and line my interior at the same time. This stuff looks great. My main concern is heat from the exhaust damaging it. Any problems there?

Heat hasn't been bad thus far, but my drives have just been in town. I have a 1 hr drive to the Jeep Jamboree next week and I'll run it 70-80. It will be warm then. It was pretty warm even with the carpet.

So far, durability hasn't been an issue. I had one piece flake off in my door sill, but when it flaked off, the paint came too. I think I just missed it when I was doing my final wipe prior to lining. It was still 100% adhered to the paint, so the failure was the paint bond that I'd already broken loose. It was a clean cut too from where I used a blade to get my door sill covers off earlier.

Texture is awesome, has been grippy with wet shoes (dew on morning grass kinda wet), and looks awesome.

From the thread I've seen, this stuff will stand the heat quite well. Now if you have the catalytic cut or other exhaust issues, it may get hotter than it should. But my Jeep exhaust is 100% stock right now (at least until I do the belly up).
