New member, first Jeep, first question

Always wanted a jeep, just bought a 1998 Wrangler SE that needs work. Ok, is the front drive shaft and the axelshafts suppose to move when in 2wd? This vehicle does have auto locking hubs.

Hey Gary2, thanks for the quick reply. This is all new to me, I figured that everything would disengage to prevent less drag and wear and tear.

Yes the front driveshaft spins all the time but no your Jeep does not have auto-locking hubs. The hubs are nothing more than unit-bearing hubs that directly connect the wheels to the axle shafts. They do not disconnect. The disconnect for the front axle is inside the transfer case.

Now THAT I did not know! I always thought the front axle was completely disengaged in 2WD...

It is disconnected when in 2wd but from inside the transfer case, not from the hubs. The front tires always turn the front axle's ring & pinion gears and thus the front driveshaft though.
