New Member have a few ?'s

Hey guys. Im new here. I am on JF and MC as well as few other sites. Just figure the best advice may come from a site that what vehicle I am planning on buying. In the next two months I will be buying my first wrangler.I want to know what years/editions I should look at over a diff one (TJ vs LJ). It will be mostly me in the Jeep. Im done with college in may and just need something to go to work in and see my GF, 250 miles away while she gets her PHD . Also, needs to wheel on the weekends and do w/e else I need.
I currently own a ZJ 97 272k 4.5in lift 32s and axle swapped.. Its about time to retire it from DD Highway driver. I also have a WJ but donated it to my sister for college, as it dose better in the snow then her small car. So what Wrangler do you think I should get. I know I want 4.0 and manual other than that I cant make up my mind between the LJ or TJ. I also want to know problems to look for and what $ is about right for a 03-05. with 50-90k on it.

Welcome!

I would get a bone stock LJ Rubicon from a "clean" state (non rust)
Comes with 1o" longer wheel base
D44 is standard
I would get the automatic
price? cars.com will give you a good idea for your area, mine 15-22k

Thank you. I perfer manual over the auto in a wrangler. Its just more fun to drive to me. I have found a few LJs around me none are more than just like a X or sport. Have found no Rubis. See lots of TJ Rubis though.

Why does everyone recomend the LJ? I feel the TJ is great and there is no real advantage with the longer wheelbase when it comes to daily driving and weekend offroading. Please let me know what does the 10" longer wheelbase do for you? I have only heard about the LJ's mods being more expensive.

Also, depending on where you are working, the auto IMO is not as fun to drive but is better if you are in an area with stop and go traffic commuting.

I agree with the Rubicon edition unless you plan on going to 35" tires. They have the 4:10 gearing with D44s front and rear in addition to the low gearing transfer case.

I dont get much traffic. I also, only drive 3 miles on a highway to work. I have actually walked it before. I do like the TJ because of the length that it is. MY GC seems sometimes too big on some trails while I see YJs blow me away. I think the LJ is almost as long as my GC. I drove the TJ and fell in love with it. I really like the sahara edit the most for the green and tan set up. Also I have been comparing prices. the LJ same year more miles cost almost $2000 more putting it out of my $12000 price range. so the LJ is prob at this point a no go. Ill look for a better TJ then. I do want to know what and what not too look for when buying them. Problems. Rust areas that I should know about etc.

LJ alllll theee waaayyyyy!!!! ive had both a TJ and an LJ. having the extra room in the LJ is sooooooo amazing!!! all my groceries fit in the back with out having to fold the seat up. i can take a 2/3/4 hour trip with 3/4 ppl and still have all their stuff in the back. i dont ahve to choose ppl or their stuff. when i wheel i dont hvae to take the seat out to fit all my recovery stuff. their no down side to having extra room LJs also have a larger gas tank.

and totally get a rubi. the 4.10s are great for 33s if u plan on lifting it. and it becomes a veryyy good trail rig with just minimal mods.

its not a question of weather or not it is a better wheelbase for wheeling IT IS!! having had both TJs nd a LJ the wheel base makes a big difference. mainly in the steeping and higher ledge stuff when you need to get the front tire onto the top or a flat area to help pull u up where a shorter wheel base will just bounce you around cause the front cant get up high enough ive seen a vid that easly demistrates this ill go look for it now.

You're only seeing one side of the fence. That is most certainly true in some situations, but in others it's not. There are some trails we take that the longer LJs/Cherokees have to bypass because of the tight turns. The break-over angle is also much worse, and requires more lifting/tucking to be as capable as a TJ. We see this at Rausch all the time. The first time I was at Rausch we watched an LJ attempt a climb on the comp course that required a pretty good breakover angle. After about 15 attempts he called it quits because he just kept getting stuck on his t-case skid. My buddy with a TJ that had the same size 4" lift and a t-case drop was able to climb up it on his first try.

They both definitely have their strengths and weaknesses; sometimes a little extra wheelbase helps and other times it hurts. It's certainly not always better though.

No matter which I get. I either want a sahara or a rubi Jeep. I like the sahara more cause of the colors on the int.But ill settle with what ever comes my way and be happy. I have a ZJ and think its too big to wheel on some trails with out making it smaller or bashing up the back when turning. I wheel in NJ. If I leave I go to Rausch Creek. I also dont wheel much on rocks,mostly mud or forest trails.

we can argue back and forth all day about what tj/lj weve seen do what. but plain and simple the wheel base is better for wheeling. if it wernt better they wouldnt be selling STRETCH kits they would b sellin shortning kits for LJs wouldnt they.

Uh no. That would make the safety of the vehicle plummet to bring the wheels inward. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I've done trails right behind an lj and made it over obstacles easier than the lj did. And vise versa. The only reason I would like an lj is for the additional space

To the OP. if you wheel in mostly mud and forest trails and you are going to be driving 250 miles to see your girlfriend then go with the LJ. This is coming from someone who has had a TJ for 10 years. The maybe 2 feet of added length isn't going to hamper you that much in the trees and it will help you more in the mud. Also, for what your going to be using it for 90 percent of the time ( on road driving ) the longer wheel base will give you a better ride. And like others have said you will actually have room to put things inside of it. But like you also said, your budget is the biggest factor.. Good luck in your search.

Yea budget is the biggest prob here. I like both TJ and LJ.

Who knows of a good. Credit union I can get a loan from so I can buy a wrangler from and outside seller. Ive searched but all seem fine. Want to get some opinions on whos used who.

Found a 04 Rubi. 95k 11900. Not too bad. Its a a dealership. But too many miles to get a loan. So ill try getting a outside loan else were.

I also saw this. Its a 99. Has 150k on it but should still be good for another 100k. Its a little pricy. Id try to get it more for 6000.
