new member here, need some help!!

hi,

just joined the site, just got a 2000 tj like 3 weeks ago. wranglers have always been my favorite car/truck, so when my wife lease was up we found a deal on this wrangler, only 68k miles!

my problem: few days ago started vibrating in 4th a little bit, but in 5th when it hits 60 it would vibrate the whole car, hear change rattling, seat vibrating, cant see out of the rear view due to vibrating, ect.
my mechanic buddy said take it to a tire shop and get the tires balanced.
I did, but they were busy and about to close but he looked at the tires and said it was balance issue and set me up for 8a, today.

this morining at 6am i was taking the wife to work, going only 50 on eway, then like 3 miles later sounded like something snapped or broke off under the car, then as i got off the eway going slow it sounds like something is clunking real bad under the car almost like something is dragging, but there isnt. got it parked at a kfc, nothing is broke off from i could see in no light at 6am, but under the driver side it started leaking something. so now i am waiting for a tow to the shop that as always worked on my cars.

my brother has always been my go to handy man ( i am the book smart grad student) for everything from cars to anything, he has been my hero, but he just suffered a bad stroke, so now I feel helpless without him. so any advice will be much appreciated. I love our wrangler and I am trying to and want to learn everything about it inside out.

thank you in advance!

Check the track bar to make sure it is still attached and attached properly. It's bar/rod that goes from the at one side to the frame on the opposing side and makes sure the axle is centered under the jeep. This might cause the vibrations. And if one of the bolts on it broke it would make steering very difficult. I have personal experience with that

I'd also check your U-joints to see how they are wearing. If the vibration was felt more in the seat than the steering wheel, then they could possibly be bad. Congrats no the purchase though!!

thanks guys!!

update: when the tow guy started pulling away, the transfer case fell off!
so what im I dealing with? in terms of price and what else it could entail in reparing it?

also,is this something I could have done in the last 2.5 weeks or is this something that had to have been ongoing for it to happen? I bought the car as is from the dealer I understand that, but if its something they should pay for I hope they would.

Unless you have done some crazy off roading that HAS to be preexisting...

Can you post some pictures ASAP please would like to see...

Take pictures of the rear of the transmission where the trans and transfercase go together something there had to break and take pictures of the transfercase where it would go against the transmission then we can probably tell you what your looking to have to fix....

Good luck man!!!!

sorry it was towed to my shop so i cant take pics right now.
I am waiting for them to call me and let me know eta and anything else.
anyone have rough estimates on what it should cost for something of this nature?
this is a locally owned family shop next doors to my uncles pharmacy, both have been there and family operated for over 50 years. they always work on all of our cars over the years.

This is going to cost a lot of $$$$ family friends shop or not...

That why we need the pictures...

A new or rebuilt transfercase IF which it sounds like it did break off the transmission is anywhere from $1000-$1800 with core...

If the transmission is messed up which it probably is from the sounds of it your looking at about $1800-$2300 for rebuilt to new...

Call the shop ask them to snap some pictures and text them to you...

Didn't think about the U-joints! Sorry, I was waiting on my 8 am class to start. Wasn't fully awake. But definitely keep us posted. We can help you out and maybe learn a thing or two about our own jeeps

we just bought it like 3 weeks ago too!!
Wife called me from work, and said she called the dealership to complain and get them to pay for this. the sales guy who sold the car, said he has to talk to the manager. but he said he does not think he will do anything about it b/c it was bought "as is"-
I mean they sold us an unsafe wrangler, this was not something caused by us.
I think that is just wrong!

That's why we call 'em "Stealerships"! But in all seriousness I hope y'all get this figured out. And don't let this experience scare you away from Jeeps forever! They really are fun and generally safe.

So the transfer case fell off? Was there a skid plate on it?

From what I understand the skid plate is a support for the transfer case. I made the mistake once of driving without a skid plate and luckily didn't drop mine.
Sounds like the stealer is at fault for not disclosing you were buying an incomplete vehicle...

yeah, the attorneys general office report over complaints from the dealership in the last year on their used cars! I am calling back again and asking for the manager directly, I am not about to pay 600 bucks when I should not have to! I need full size doors that the money can be spent on instead lol

I still want to see some pictures and $600+ labor and fluids ect is cheap how many miles are on that transfercase and how many miles are on your Jeep?

If your getting the work done do a sye kit and cv driveshaft or get a Rubicon transfercase and cv shaft don't put in a high mileage t-case now because you will regret it later...

In my opinion that's total bull... That dealer is solely responsible for this. I'm not exactly sure what you could do legally (or if it's worth it money wise) but they sold you a jeep that was NOT complete and could've SERIOUSLY injured you, your wife, or someone else on the road had the t-case fallen out while you were driving! Just imagine what could've happend.... I hope you get this figured out man.

yeah talked to a few consumer lawyers who specialize in auto-fraud.
they said as is does not mean they can get out of this like they think, its called auto-fraud, since they lied about it being looked at thoroughly inspected ensuring me it was in perfect working condition after being looked at by their mechanic. anything they say orally overides any written as is contract. he is going to find me someone who is a lawyer in that town that I bought it in. explaining everything he sounded confident, says this is a big thing in ohio now.
