New Owner Needs Advice on Soft Tops

I hope someone can help me. I just bought a 2007 Wrangler with a hard top (I live in Cleveland so the weather dictates I need it). However, I'm going to buy a soft top this week as the weather is nice enough. I'm wondering if anyone can steer me towards which top should I buy? Should I take it to a local dealer, a local vendor that will put one on, order it online (there are a lot of options and I'm new to this) and doit myself? What should I expect to pay?

The dealer I bought it from hooked me up with a local shop called Finish Line and they said they'd install the hardware and a new black top with tinted windows for $1075. I have no idea if this is a fair price and when I looked online there were a lot of option that may be cheaper but I don't know good from bad. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks!

Amazon has just about the best prices on the internet from what Ive seen... Popular choices at the moment seem to be either the Rampage setup or the Trektop NX the Trekop NX comes with everything you need. While the rampage will require you to purchase additional items resulting in a similar cost in the end... I am going with a Trektop NX myself I have other things on my priority list for the jeep right now. I want the hardtop off in a bad way as well

Jeep has most of the tops "outsourced" to Bestop. They make the OEM tops. IMO anything Bestop is worth it, but you will pay "more" .... at least up front. But IMO they will last longer than some of the cheaper options. If you get it from a dealer it will be very costly. The manufacture has the market cornered for their exact design....I believe not even Bestop can sell the exact same top as installed at the factory.

That all being said...to me $1075. seems like highway robbery. If you have basic understanding of how to follow instructions you should be able to install it yourself. There are a LOT of videos and how - tos that can help guide you. There is a "frameless" soft top available from Bestop that would be very simple.

The biggest complaint is the material is very tight has to be "stretched" when first installed. If you can wait for an 80° day wouldn't be that bad. I think that top is about $600-$700. Shipped to your door.

I have the Rampage Frameless on my '05 TJ. I love it. True that you have to buy the surrounds, tailgate bar, and windshield channel. I already had the windshield channel, but got the tailgate bar and top for a great deal on truckaddons.com. Had a buddy buy the door surrounds for me on eBay since I don't have an account. My advice is to search around and research what appeals to you. I chose the Rampage because it has the storage for the side and rear windows so you always have them with you. Really appealed to me. But really it is what fits your needs. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I just installed a Bestop Supertop NX (the kind with the frame that is like original equipment) and I love it. Quadratec has a price match policy so I just ordered it from them and they verified the price I had found over the phone, I had my new top in 2 days. If you can handle a Philips head screwdriver and have 3 hours of spare time you can install it yourself. there are videos on bestop.com that you should watch first before ordering. Just make sure you let the fabric BAKE in the sun, I'm talkin HOT, before you go to stretch it over the frame. I just got to use the Sunrider feature on my top this weekend and love it

I have a 97 and just installed the Trek top NX last weekend. I love it, switching from the factory soft top to the Trektop was great. The install was quick and easy and the Jeep looks awesome without the windows on since the frame is gone as well.

It is good to buy your Jeep with a hard top, as it is usually cheaper and easier to add a soft top later.
Don't rush into the purchase of the soft top, as there are a lot of options.
I purchased my soft top from Bestop and installed it myself. I paid a premium to for the Sunrider with the fold back sun roof and it was money well spent. The Maine maritime environment is famous for it's quickly changing weather. The sun roof opens up the whole front seat area and closes up in a moment without leaving the driver's seat.
There are a lot of good tops out there as you see from the other responses to the thread - so take your time making a decision.

Since you have a 2007, it may benefit you to ask this question to the JK section.
