Man... I loves me some forums. This forum, and a few youtubes... and I'm a dangerous man.
I just replaced my starter - yes... its as easy as advertised.
My old one quit yesterday - the cable between the solenoid and the starter motor corroded through. I was fearing the dreaded ignition-switch problem, so I'm glad this was simple.
I replaced it with a basic "Duralast" rebuilt from Autozone. It's significantly louder than the old starter was... for lack of a better description, it sounds like there's an impact wrench under there.
Is this normal? I'm sure I've got everything GNFT down there, so there's nothing loose.
When I replaced my blower fan, I actually found I needed to "tune" it by backing off some screws. If all were tightened fully, the fan would rub against the duct.
I didn't notice any sort of play or wiggle room with the starter.
I don't think it's a grind - I hit the starter w/ the engine running to confirm the real 'grind' sound.
Starts up fine... but I just don't wanna have to replace it again in 6 mos if something isn't right.. or worse...a flywheel!
