New TJ - Exhaust Question

Hey all! I just bought a 2004 Sport 6cyl, 22k miles. Light khaki w/ both hard and soft tops. 5spd of course! Future plans include black wheels, 32" or 33" tires, either a 2" susp lift and 1" body lift, or a 3-4" suspension lift. Its my daily driver so I'm not sure how high I'll go in order to keep it highway friendly. All sorts of other mods in my mind too for appearance, armor, performance, etc.

Hopefully you'll bear with me as I'm sure I'll have tons of questions over the next few months. I'm the type that wants to learn as much as I can about my new toys.

I'll start with this and hopefully you all can help me. I was looking at adding an aftermarket exhaust. With the mustang gt I had....this was huge and sounded unreal. Do exhaust systems sound good on the 6cyl....I don't want to sound like a Honda Civic with a fart can. I've seen some nice cat-back systems....or I've also thought about just having a Flowmaster welded in.

Anyone have any modded exhaust setups? How do they sound?

Thanks!

I put one of the Flowmaster Extreme Offorad mufflers in. It doesn't sound too bad but it definitely isn't a V-8. The FMXOR is basicallly a 40 with thicker diamond plate. I have heard that TJ's sound better with 50's, but I put it in for strength more than sound. Try kevinsoffroad.com if you are looking for Jeep performance. the guy Kevin goes through (Nick aka kolak) has been doing jeep perf for many a year.

That all being said, the 4.0 is great for low end torque, but is a turd in all other things, you are not going to get much out of it.

I would like to add an exhaust question as an addon to the original. Anyone know how well a glasspack would sound?

Thanks! Its hard to be a V8 sound with no cats and chambered mufflers.

So are performance mods on the 4.0's pretty much a waste of money....things like tuners, intakes, throttle bodies, etc.? I know these things are built for torque, and its actually a lot peppier than I expected. Should I focus my money on suspension mods instead?

Had one on my 6 banger, If its a daily driver like mine, You'll like it in the begining, but it will get lame in no time, Its very loud inside the jeep, I swapped mine out(after my driveshaft destroryed when it broke free) and got a flowmaster 40 series, I couldn't be happier, not loud inside the jeep, but had deep grumble to it outside.

Glasspack=loud and annoying, similar to running straight pipes.
Flowmaster 40 series=nice deep tone

Rustys Flowmaster package for the TJ. $169

http://rustysoffroad.com/mm5/merchan...y_Code=PER_EXH

This is what it sounds like. The engine was a bit cold and the camera was a bit close, but it sounds sweet. I guarantee you'll like it.

you can do a search adn you wil find that diofferent people say different things, btu the consensus is that the 4.0 is made for torque and not high revs

look at the hp thread, if you want better accelration i would regear, ESPECIALLY if you r gonne get bigger tires, if you get bigger tires and dont regear it will be kinda slow
