New TJ - Need advice

I recently purchased a 2000 TJ 4.0 auto. Jeep is in great shape. 2.5 lift. etc. My question is as follows. The 4.0 has developed a slight piston slap an low pressure when warm and idling. Right now I depend on this vehicle so i am taking it easy on it. Come winter i will have the chance to do somethong about it. On about a $3000 budget would i be better off buying a crate engine or pull and have my old one rebuilt. I would need to do this ovwr a weekend. Thats why i am leaning towards a crate. I have even seen strokers for about 2500. Please let me know your thoughts and experiences.
