Question New TJ owner... have questions...

Hey everyone!
I've been hanging around debating weather to buy a wrangler or something else... well wait is over because i am the proud owner of a used (let's not call it pre-owned) 1997 Wrangler Sport with a 4.0 I6... It runs great and has a new besttop soft top with half doors. And ofcourse this is my first jeep ever... and have plenty of questions ... first thing is that the steering on this jeep is loose only on one side... ie if i turn fast right it really want to go right instead of just alittle right... u know? not so much when turning left...
Also how does one take off the soft top and ride with it stored in the back?
And there is a gap in the rear 'window' where the spare is ... it doesn't look very water tight? Am i missing something??
Thanks for any help!!!

My steerings loose too, you can adjust it or live with it

soft top is easy, look on youtube for some good how to videos!

Yes, there is a metal piece that should be on the bottom of the windown that fits between the window and top of the tail gate. do you have this? dont worry about water, itll be fine.

well ... i saw the videos and it seems like a simple process .. i just need to make sure all the hardware is there that is needed... this jeep has half doors and had originally a bikini top then a besttop soft top was put on and as far as i can tell they never installed the tailgate rear window part... the bar that makes the rear window taught to the tailgate...

I'm gonna have the alignment checked and the tires rebalanced next week see if this is the problem... after that check all the plastic/rubber on the steering parts...
we'll see what happens..

Post a pic of the back and we can help you determine what parts you need, but it sounds like you need a tailgate bar and possibly the brackets for it to mount to. They're easy to get. You can check ebay and CL for used, or Morris 4x4, Quadratec, and lots of other places online for new.

Congrats on the Jeep, don't forget to wave!

Also for the steering after you check alignment there a a ton of other things to check, but just keep in mind up to an inch of so of play in the steering wheel going straight ahead IS normal for a wrangler.

Congratulations!! I was in your same situation two weeks ago today; purchased my first Jeep ever and it's a '97 TJ! I used to own an old K5 Blazer and, to be honest, I was a bit annoyed by the whole Jeep thing (I think that idea was put in my head by other K5 owners because they were intimidated by the Jeep's off-road capabilities). Now that I own one.... I think it's great! Anyway, I've still got a lot to learn but, the more I learn, the more I like my Jeep.

I saw this video last night and it answered alot of my questions... great video! best part was when he's talking about 'making your own cds using a "computer" and them not playing on stock stereos!!!' hilarious!

I took a look at the rear of the soft top and sure enough I 'm missing the tailgate bar under the rear window... it was previously running a bikini top so the bar wasn't needed... I'm looking for one on ebay or amazon...

I've learned alot the little time i've been here and now just need some time off of work to get to doing the things that need to get done....

thanks everyone ... oh and

the metal bar on the back window fits upsidedown. at least it does on my 05. if its upsidedown it leaves a gap. took me a while to figure that out o.O
