New to Jeeps.....first upgrades?

I've had my 2002 TJ now for 2 months and am embarassed of my stock set-up. I'm thinking about doing a 4" lift, and buying new wheels and tires first.

My real question is what wheels size to go with. I plan on putting 33's on the wheels, and was told 35"s would be better.

The TJ is not a daily driver but my wife drives it around more than I do, I don't want the ride to be too rough that it takes the enjoyment out driving it for her. My desire is to have a pretty tough looking set up that handles well on and off the road.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Why are you embarassed about your stock setup. Jeeps are very capable right out of the box.

That said, need some details of your vehicle and plans before suggestions can be made. What engine, transmission, gearing do you have. What do you plan on doing with it. What are you going to wheel in on? (rocks, sand, mud, malls)

I have the 4L I6, w/5 speed manual transmission. I don't know the gearing, but I'll see what was stock on that model. No extreme off-roading, but I can't say that for sure until I've had it on a trail and see what I really like. For sure my wife will consider it the pool car for her & the grand kids, they love just the way it is.

But I bought it to be a project, and keep me off of motorcyles, and buying guns & ammo. Well maybe!
