New to Jeeps! Input appreciated

Hi Guys,

I am new here and was hoping to get some input from you guys. I have the Jeep Wrangler bug and absolutely want one NOW. I found a decently priced 98 Wrangler SE, with the following issues:

-110k + miles (current owner says odometer gets stuck at time and needs a tap to get it to start rolling again. Current reading is 110k miles)

- Rusted floorboards, some rust on doors

- Has been sitting for a whole, needs U joints, tires, fluid swaps.

- No top

It's the 2.5 , 4cyc, 5 speed.

Are there any trouble spots? Other than the rust?

Is that engine reliable? I need this to be a reliable car!

It will be a second car and winter car. Don't do a lot of highway driving or towing.

Or do I need the 4.0?

Thanks for your input.

Well, if the price is right on it, should be a good jeep for you.

Not a lot of freeway driving (and no towing) means that the 2.5 will be suitable for you. 110K isn't excessive for that engine or for a 98 vehicle. With some TLC and maintenance it should run for another 100K or more.

Rust (unless it's already penetrated) is easily dealt with as are the fluids, U-joints and tires.

So, find out what it's worth on KBB and then grind the guy on the top/rust/fluids etc and try to save enough to pay for that stuff. If not, move on. There are plenty out there. Good luck.

I would absolutely hold out for a 4.0.. It took me 6 months to find mine, so just hang in there.. Sports and Sahara models with come with 4.0 liter engines and some even come with the optional Dana 44 rear-end.. 4.0 and a Dana 44 and you are already tons of cash ahead considering what you would spend on a 4 cyl to get half of the performance and reliability..

If your on a tight budget and this one is cheap, i would say go for it. because as long as your not towing or going on the highway alot the 2.5 will be fine, and the 2.5 can hold its on and most trails (just don't go rock crawling with it) plus you could always buy it cheap fix it up a bit and sell it for more.

Hmmm. Sounds pretty good price wise. Any other "major" problems? You gonna be happy? Got the $$$?

It's all up to you. You've heard the 4.0 vs. 2.5 arguments (above). Do what your heart says to do.

Thanks again.

There is a crack in the windshield. No other "major" issues that I know off, yet!

I am not a super tight budget, but wouldn't hurt either if I could get one and fix it up and save a few bucks. This will most likely end up being my winter car and a ride for the dog/short home depot trips.

The other problem is the damn thing is 3 hours away. Going to go take a look this weekend and decide.

No opinion on this Jeep, but just curious - if you drive three hours to see it, what are the odds that you could just walk away? I know I probably couldn't. To much commitment already.

I think if you take that drive, you've bought the Jeep. Of course, you may actually have will power, whereas I just have poor impulse control. Luckily I also have no money.

Yeah they are reliable vehicles with proper care. Just keep in mind the 4 banger wont pull out of a traffic light like a dragster. I've heard of these lasting over 200K miles and then some. and If you want a lift and big tires, you might need to address the weak D35 rear axle

The odometer problem is fixed by removing the cluster and cleaning corrosion off the cluster terminals and coating with Di-electric grease.

Rusted doors? you can probably find some soft doors cheap in the classified sections of this jeep forum and others.

U-joints and fluids- easy fixes for a weekend warrior.

Tires- you can find good deals on the Jeep forum classifieds (people upgrade or go bigger and want to ditch their old rubber)

No top? is the frame hardware there? If it is you can find replacement tops starting at $300 for the most basic Here: ( Jeep Parts, Jeep Accessories & Jeep Soft Tops From The Jeep Parts Experts - Quadratec or Jeep Parts, Jeep Accessories, & Jeep Tops ā€“ Jeep Wrangler Parts by 4 Wheel Drive Hardware ā€“ Your Jeep Parts Source*. ) If you don't have the frame hardware you can buy a bestop kit with the hardware and top. OR you can buy a frameless top that uses the roll bars as the frame work.

The floor boards- need to stop the rust from continuing and maybe reinforce with some sheet metal.

$2500 is good, but considering all you have to do. See if they'll do $2000. I paid 8K for my 99 SE 3 years ago. Well taken care of and 98K miles. It never gave my any problems other than being slow at the starting line. recently traded it for an 05 LJ.
