New Wrangler Owner

Hey guys. I'm new to the Jeep world and am looking at a 2006 Unlimited.
What are things I really need to look for before buying it? When I went to test drive this one, there was water in the passenger floorboard. Does water come through the vent on the hood into the driving area or would this indicate a leak? It is a soft top. It has 132,xxx miles.

Is it completely stock? Check for rust for starters. Especially on the frame. Tell us about any mods that might have been done to it if you know of any. And pics are always good too if you can get any.

Pretty sure it's stock. I didn't see any rust. It seems to be well taken care of.

That looks stock to me as well. Only thing I'd be worried about is frame rust. Fenders can be replaced if need be. The moisture in the floorboard is the A/C I believe. Looks like a nice find man!

This was excessive amount of water. Like a puddle & the lady who was showing me it said that it was from the rain we just got. Is that a possibility?

Yes. Possible. How much water are we talking here? Did they leave the top down or something? I've had rain come in through an unripped top before, but it was borderline hurricane rain and winds. Is the top ripped anywhere maybe? That's weird

The top looks in perfect condition. Luckily the dealer had plastic on the carpet, but it was enough to have a little puddle. We pulled up the plastic to dump out the water before test driving it.

if the previous owner put down the windshield before the seal might not be so great now and could leak. looks can be deceiving with the tops.

Didn't think about the windshield. That's a good point. It could also be the seal on the top of the windshield between the top header bar. Either way it sounds like a fixable thing.
Maybe just a new top or header bar or new seals on the windshield.

If the problem is simple, I wouldn't let it scare me away from that LJ. And this sounds like a quick easy fix to me. New top, maybe a new seal on the windshield.

I have been pricing hard tops. Other than that and an alignment, I'm pretty much in love with it!

Sounds like an awesome find to me. And fixing stuff up is part of owning a jeep. If anything, it'll be fun and you'll have knowledge to help others out later on.

True. I just want to make sure there were no major issues associated with these Jeeps. The only Jeep I've ever really drove is my mom's Liberty and I hate that thing. But I love Wranglers.

One major issue: You find something you WANT for the jeep, it slowly but surely becomes a NEED.

Oh I know how that goes. I have a car that I've been customizing for 6 years. I'm now expanding my collection and looking for something different. I've always had a things for Wranglers.

Very fun! Its often referred to as a money pit. Hahaha. But I see it as a hobby. Working on it and changing stuff on it is fun to do!

Exactly. My car is my money pit at the moment. My mom hates it. I told her I could be spending money on worse things.

Do you think $11,800 is too high?

I tell my parents that all the time! When my mom freaked over my lift price I just said "Hey, at least I'm spending my hard earned money on a good hobby and not drugs". And she agreed and calmed down calling it a "hobby" always seems to help. And besides, if we told everyone else it was really an "obsession" then they'd all think we really had something wrong with us! Haha

Depends upon where you're from and the prices of jeeps there. We got mine back in 08 for 8,900. It had 57k miles on it but its also a '98 4 banger. So I'd say that's a pretty fair price, but I'd still try to talk them down if I was buying it around where I'm from.

I know. And that's a significantly more amount of miles. But like I said, it's all about jeeps in your area. In South Mississippi they don't go for lots of money. They're actually just now getting a little pricier.
But I'll let others comment on the price of the jeep. That's a matter hugely based on opinion and location.

Hopefully I can talk the owner down a bit.

I'm sure you can. Argue that you'll have to buy a new top and possibly windshield seals and that it needs an alignment.

And as far as they know it could very well be the top. Just saying you could drop the line "Well there's obviously a leak somewhere so a new top or parts for it may be needed."

Check at the cowl to see if the drain is plugged too.

Is that right under the hood? Dumb question I know, but I've never been under the hood of a Jeep.
