X2 - make sure you get a 90 day - 3K mile warranty on the powertrain. Unless you are mechanically inclined, take it to a reputable mechanic and have them look it over. It's worth the $200 to save yourself $12K.

It sounds like a nice deal. Jeeps are pretty tough. However, the big question is how well was this Jeep maintained? Does itr have curent state inspection?

Do a Carfax Report on it too to make sure the odometer jives and it wasn;t a salvage title.

i just did a carfax. title seems fine, and the miles seem to match up. the only thing i dont really like is the fact its had 5 owners in the 8 years its been alive for.

owner 1 was a fleet vehicle for 2 years
owner 2 had it for 7 months
owner 3 had it for 19 months
owner 4 had it for 18 months
owner 5 had it for 9 months

is this something to cause concern for me?

i would say yes and no.. people buy jeeps and sell it becaus it is an impractical vehicle. i would use the money and look for a jeep that is stock, with maybe a lift and tires with regular maintenance done..

i just dont trust such a crazy build. why would the last owner have it for less than 9 months. even if the 4 owner was the builder he would have bought it knowing it was a built jeep.. lastly why waste all that money and sell it after 9 months. not only did he lost money he traded it in meaning he will get lesser value for a trade in then selling it private party..

dont ask me how I think about this.. but take my advce buy a stock jeep or one with minimum mods and go from there.. you'll be much happier building it yourself.

It all deppends on what you want to do with it. If its gonna be a trail rig then its a great deal because of all the mods, but if its gonna be a DD then i would do like bpowa said and buy a stock jeep thats been a garage queen, that way you know it hasnt been abused.

well why i want the thing is because i will have little if anything to upgrade. and all the trucks/4runners ive had, im sick of investing money on things and inturn selling it for a huge loss of what i actually put into it. i think ive learned by now to buy something that has what you want on it already.

lol it seems like as gas $ increased the amount of time they kept it decreased.. i wonder if thats why it had 5 owners and each kept it for only a year

bpowa:

i hear ya on jeeps are to some an impractical vehicle. but i can accept that and am willing to live with it. have many friends with wranglers and they have been happy with them.

i dont know what to make of the carfax. if i knew when the crazy build went on, it would maybe answer a few of my questions. but since i dont, its hard.

was the build done a number years back, and the owners bought it thinking it was hella cool, and then finding out it was not the best idea, and sale it? and maybe that happened a few times?

i totally hear ya on your points, and trust me, ive considered all options/reasons.

what im not gonna do is buy something stock and put a ton of cash into just to get it to where i want it.... been there, done that. not doing it anymore.

bring up to the guy how impractical it is to the guy and tell him you would walk.. do you have pics from autotrader?

a gas issue? you think that stroking that stock 4.0L to a 4.5L or 4.6L was the deciding factor in keeping a jeep like that? im curious now as to what a stroker engine gets versus a stock one.

i cant imagine its night and day difference.

Go for it! Looks kick ass. Make sure to get the engine looked at prior to purchase though.

ok im no expert on wranglers, this is the 3rd time ive drove it; the steering seems to be loose. maybe loose isnt a relative term but i mean that i kinda have to over correct every major move i make to get the rig in a strait line. its not extremely bad, but just a little more play in a steering system than im used to.

bad?? or get used to it with that size lift?

My cousin had a similar problem in a very similar jeep from a used dealership, and she recently had to pay to get it fixed because it slowly got worse. It also has a bad engine problem that couldn't be detected at the time, and will eventually need to be fixed.

My ex had a Jeep that was all jacked up like that and it was impossible to drive with wind and bridges and what not because of the loose steering you're talking about. It was disgusting cool looking and he had a ridiculous stereo in it, but I ended up not being real comfortable using it just to get around town.

My $ 0.02.

She didn't tell anyone. I think she is embarrassed cuz everyone in the family told her not to buy anything too quickly, and she went out and bought it that day without any help from our auto-savy family members.

so heres the bad new:

wont pass safety/emissions:

front tires stick out too far
frame height is 2" too tall (26")
needs a muffler
needs a parking brake
needs a third brake light

dealer said he would cover all these issues at no cost to me.

more bad news:

most of the aftermarket stuff installed that required welding was done very poorly
front bump stops were replaced with aluminum ones
no rear bump stops
rear axle truss not sufficiently braced
transfer case is supposedly leaking ( i didnt see anything)

im hearing a weird noise, maybe a transfer case problem but probably a driveshaft issue
also hearing a whining noise under the hood. could possibly be the K&N FIPK ? maybe?

if the dealer is willing to make it pass emissions i'd go for it. This thing seems like a treasure.

Make sure they don't "fix" the tire sticking out problem by putting on thinner tires

lol more bs rims will fix it right.

oh oh i think thats the reason why they only had it 1 year each at the time. They bought it, got the emissions request thing a year after and saw it doesn't pass and sold it. Same thing with the next person and the next one.

as far as the frame height, put on some limiting straps and when you're through the emissions you can pull them off or also you can remove the coil spacers and put on adjustable ones.

as far as frame height goes, Teraflex Plus said theyve seen places just air down the tires and then measure it.

its going to a shop on monday to get a muffler, third brake light installed, new o2 sensor, parking brake fixed, Safety and I/M done. all on his dime.

im just wondering what they have in mind on doing to make the wider tires pass safety ??
