Just in case you dont know what D44 is, that would be the rear differential. Make sure it has a metal plug, not black plastic one. All you have to do is get down on the floor and look at it, it should be right on the cover there.
Any year you select in your range should be fine. I personally would bypass the 97's unless you found a really good deal. New model year, had some bugs, different HAVC controls from the rest (replacement parts harder to locate). Just my opinion. I6 or I4 are both good engines, I6 will cost more but do better on highways. I too second the D44, only available on the I6, regardless if you plan to run bigger tires or not. It will increase resale if you decide to sell later.
99 SE with less than 43K on the clock and a few mods......
Personally I recommend anything pre-00. Jeeps seemed to get longer and longer the newer they got. Manifolds haven't been a problem for me.... knock on wood.
There also seem to be a few more aftermarket parts for pre-00. Its your choice

well im not dealing with the owner. the owner did a trade in with a car dealer (used or new i dont know)
it was then bought by another used car dealer who is apparently a wholesaler, in which im dealing with.
they dont seem to know a whole lot about the vehicle.
im thinking im gonna take it to a place called TeraFlex PLUS. it used to be called MEPCO, i guess teraflex bought them out. anyways, they only deal with jeeps. im gonna see what they think about the thing, maybe they can tell me more about it.
i havent talked to the wholesaler about anything, except what he know about the jeep, which seemed to be not much.
he has the jeep listed on autotrader.com. for $13,995, but when i went to look at it the other day, and not saying a thing about it, he said it was listed as $13,000. what does this mean?
i also highly doubt i will get any warranty of any kind.
It means they're willing to dicker on price, and I wouldn't go over $10,000 without some sort of warranty.
