Talking Newb here, Looking for some advice


I Bought an '06 TJ at the beginning of Movember. She's Black w/hard top, 6 speed, Banks Monster cat-back, Tasteful wheels, 31X10.5R15's. Her name is Diana Boss and I love my rig.

I want to make some modifications for more power, better fuel economy, and maybe a soft top for the summer. This vehicle is my daily driver so I want to avoid lifting it. The previous owner put the new tires on at 20,000 miles and the odometer reads 36k now so I need to get the speed/odometer discrepancy fixed ASAP.

How can I Calibrate for the larger tires?
What do ya'll recommend for more power?
What kind of fuel economy do you folks get (my emphasis was in transport economics so I'm just interested)

I greatly appreciate any advice, I just do not trust the guys at the off-road shop not to pile on crap to take advantage.

You can pickup a new speedometer gear for around 35 bucks. Need to match your tires and gears when selecting your speedometer gear.
Economy??? Good luck Jeeps aren't driven for economy. If you get 15 be happy :-)
More power? I dunno. I don't know of any bolt on things that actually work other than changing your gearing.

re-gearing is your best option for more power and will serve you well as a daily driver and may, I say MAY increase your fuel economy. Depending on what gears you have installed at the moment it may not be worth the money to get it re-geared. You can look at your front and rear differential carrier and if they are stock they should have a silver metal tag riveted to them that tells the type of gears that are installed inside. with you only having 31 10.50s I would imagine you are ok with the gears you have now. you prob have 3.73's, if you have 3.07's it will prob still be ok but if you really want more power then re-gearing to 4.10's is prob your best option. Check with a local shop that deals with Jeeps or 4WD vehicles a lot and get a professional opinion and match that up to what you want out of your Jeep. It will improve horse power and low-end torque but it will run you between 900-1200 for parts and installation and it is highly recommended that someone who really knows what they are doing install them for you. you need to have the same gears in the front and rear axle or you will not be able to engage 4WD and then your Jeep would be useless. Gears them self are cheap bout 180-220 a set but the installation is what is expensive. Good luck on deciding what you are going to do. If you plan on getting bigger tires in the future, consider that when choosing your gear ratio, because it is so expensive to get your Jeep re-geared you don't want to do it more than once, unless you just have to money laying around.

Money isn't really an issue, so i believe i may re-gear it with 3.73's or 4.10 in the near future as im pretty certain it has 3.07's now.

I am considering a K&N FIPK. The hole setup is only like $235 and it supposedly adds a little over 10hp and 10 lb/ft while increasing fuel economy. I understand the concept of opening up the breathing, but is this thing for real? Anybody have experience with the FIPK?

P.S. I took her out for some off-roading in snow covered corn fields last night, what a ball! This is the single best vehicle purchase I have ever made!

welp, a new gear for the speedo as said above for new tire size

for fuel economy, I get great with my jeep, same as yourse tranny, tires and all. I drive like a cenile 90 year old cripple most the time but it results in high teens around town and twenties on the highway. Gearing is right for highway because at about 60mph in sixth gear you are around 2k rpm. Many people don't realise the gear ratio difference with the six speed. It allows you to run 31's very well.

for power, I have a new, cammed sbc with performer air cap intake, 650 quadrajet, and E-Street heads I'll sell ya. all the power you could handle in a jeep!!!!!!!!!!

I meant air gap intake, but either way, I was more feeding the fire for v8 swap to a tj like ours.

sbc: small block chevy (v8)
cammed: performer rpm style high performance cam
air gap intake: intake manifold
650 quadrajet: carburetor
E-Street heads: cylinder heads

mostly sarcasm, i get a few beers in and get kinda carried away. I ended up going back to to vent otherwise I spend the evening wrenching on my engines and driving the wife crazy with my music. lol, any way you look at it, the v8 swap probably won't help the fuel consumption cause very well.

Aside from having optimal gearing ratio, the most cost effective way to get the most MPG is to have your tires at the max rated PSI for the tire and be nice to the gas pedal.
