Newb looking at a TJ. Good deal?

Hey all,

I'm lookin at a '97 TJ sport located about a half-hour away from me. It is a 4.0 5 speed with 110,000 miles. Here are a list of upgrades:
  • 4" skyjacker lift
  • 4.10 gears
  • Nice 33" BFGoodrich KM2 tires
  • Slip yoke eliminator
  • Detroit tru-trak rear locker
  • on board air compressor
  • disconnect sway bar
  • rock rails and skid plates
This appears to be a nice jeep, but then again, I am a newbie. It has a perfect interior. The guy is asking $7900. Is this a good deal? The only thing that concerns me is the typical rust under the taillights. Is this difficult to fix or expensive to have fixed? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

At first glance I wouldn't pay $7900. But more info on the specifics like what skid plates, air compressor, etc. would help. Even still, I wouldn't pay much more than normal for a vehicle that has aftermarket add-ons, and there is no way I'd pay almost $8K for a 97 TJ with a cheap suspension and rust issues. I'd look elsewhere. Chances are you're inheriting someone else's problems.

I typically try to buy stock vehicles. Not that you have to, but I always like to know things have been done the way I want them to be done.

It sounds pretty good based on the info you provided, but you really need to check it out and compare it to other Wranglers so you get an idea of what to be looking for.

I remember the first Wrangler I looked at had a great interior, but upon closer inspection looked like is spend a week at the bottom of the ocean. Basically it had bad rust corrosion from salted roads.

So just look it over carefully, look for fluid leaks, etc so you know what you are getting into if you gut tells you to buy it.

The good news is that Wranglers are fun and pretty easy to work on.

a little over a year ago - I bought a '97 sahara - totally stock - has a few more miles than yours - and its an I-6 5 speed paid $5k

It didn't have:
4" skyjacker lift
4.10 gears
Nice 33" BFGoodrich KM2 tires
Slip yoke eliminator
Detroit tru-trak rear locker
on board air compressor
disconnect sway bar
rock rails and skid plates

However is has absolutely NO rust - that being said - you'll need to figure the cost of the up grades - and how much it would cost to install - - then figure the cost to repair the rust

Remember - cost for a Jeep is relitive to the area you live - just like realestate - location, location, location

I would say don't do it. I just paid $5,000 for a 97 TJ sport with 33's and slight rust issues. This was from a client of mine that I've known for a while and it was a good deal but still, almost $8k is a bit too much. I'd pay $6,500 maybe

If it looks like it's in good shape, I'd say it's a good deal. see if you can have a mechanic look at it. it's got all the good mods already on it. if you like a jeep with all those things on it, that's $$ saved. if you bought a stock jeep for $6500, and put all of those upgrades on it, you would have spent alot more than what he's asking for it.
