Newb Question/2003 Sport

Hello all...I'm new to the forum, and have just started what I hope will be a successful search for a Jeep. I've never owned one, but have ridden in many/done a few off-road ventures, and loved every minute of it...I've got the bug, and have started my search.

That being said...I've come across a TJ I'm a bit curious about, and wanted to get some expert opinions on if this Wrangler is worth checking into...

2003 Wrangler 'Sport' (Automatic, 4WD, 53,000 mi., soft top)
Price: $12,500
Link to Jeep Listing

The CarFax has it @ 4 owners, and looks like it was a rental in Hawaii initially. I haven't been able to get inside of it or test drive (place wasn't open when I was able to swing over), but I did a quick visual inspection, and it looked pretty decent body wise (i.e. didn't see any noticeable rust, tire treads looked good, etc).

Does this TJ look like a good deal/worth investigating a bit more, given the mileage/year, etc?

As far as what I'd use it for, no off-roading (well, except for an occasional drive on the beach). It would be used as a daily driver, but since I work at home, weekends mostly. Wouldn't be doing any long trips with it or anything...just around town/to beach (just under 2 hour drive).

I have been looking at some JKs around the area (mostly in the 2007-2009 range, $18-20k), but the couple I've looked at were surprisingly beat up/rusted, etc. Being new to all this, I'm really not sure what I should and shouldn't be paying attention to re: Wranglers, but hopefully I'll learn quickly, and can get a lot from this site/forum.

Thanks for any help/input!

- Rental cars do get abused (intentionally and because of ignorance on how to use and not use) but I'd assume if there were major problems, the previous owners would have fixed. It dod go through owners 2,3 pretty quickly. (not a good sign)

- Mileage is low for a 03. Owner 4 had it for almost 4 years but drove it for less than 5k a year. Either it was a rec vehicle or there were issues with it and could not drive it.

Thanks for the reply...all good points. I didn't even really think about the how quick the 2nd/3rd owners turned the Jeep over...as you remarked, not good. I may take it for a test run, though leaning more towards not.

It looks to me to be used as a tow-behind...front tow bar/rear tow lights.
It looks to be clean, I would go and look at it.

You need to remember that a whole bunch of people buy Jeeps as second/weekend cars. I would not let quick turnover with low mileage deter you from consideration of purchase.
The other thing you need to remember is times are still tough..and having a Jeep sit in a garage with little to no use would be the first thing to go when money is needed..
Just my 2 cents...

Also, I would use all of this to my benefit when haggling over price.

If it's a sport model then it should have rear disc brakes and a D44 rear diff. Check for those options. Otherwise, sounds like a fair deal.

Incorrect. Rubicon was the only model witrh rear disk and the D44 was optional on the Sport.

Guess I got lucky with the optional D44 w/disc brakes then. I win!

Neil's correct but my buddy also got a 44 and discs on his sport maybe those options were purchased more than I thought on the sports.

Just to be clear to the OP, the D44 is a heavy duty axle and is stronger than the D35. It may or may not matter to you depending on your usage. If you are not putting in huge tires (33+) and or are planning on doing serious off roading, the D35 rear axle is just fine.

Just me, but with the many curious points about this vehicle (built in Canada, Hawaiian rental, four owners who didn't own it long) I would just give it a pass. Jeep fever is a fickle thing. Let someone else piece together what is wrong with this one, keep looking, pick one up from an original owner

The two people that owned it for a short time may have been new to jeeps and simply didn't like how a jeep drives.

Read, I said OPTIONAL on the Sport. Who ever ordered yours ordered it. The person that I corrected that a Sport should hve the Dana 44. It may not and the build sheet shows that one does not have it.
