Newbie looking @ Wrangler purchase. Any help appreciated.

Hello! I am currently looking at a 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4.0L
I was just looking for any advice, before buying and members opinion on the vehicle in question.
Here is a link to the Jeep for sale. Used 1999 Jeep Wrangler 4X4 2dr Sport Deals in Springfield MO XP434700 | Springfield Used Jeep Deals

Here is just one of several pictures they have shown on the listing. It looks to have some aftermarket add-on's and factory upgrades? Can anyone tell me what ARE the upgrades/ lift, etc and is the asking price fair? I am going to take $7500 cash in hand, just in case after test drive... Sorry, no engine bay pics. The dealer site car fax link stated only one left rear fender impact. Is this why the spare tire rack is gone or is this delete common? Any issues I should look for, too? BTW- Sorry about the automatic trans. The wife cant iPhone and shift, she says. Thanks again to any who respond!!! Steven

I'd stay away from a stealership. Tons of jeeps out there for sale privately, and a privately owned jeep will always be a better deal. Besides that, the seller will actually look you in the eye.

Looks nice, Everyone always mentions looking under frame for rust issues. $7-$7500. Spare tire, owners preference, Others will chime in on lift height, and maybe lift issues?? Good luck. My 01 sport was $8500. ^^ owners are always best x2^

Judging by the pictures and the mileage for the year I'd say its a fairly decent deal. I wouldn't worry about a 'fender impact' too much. I had two on my Supercrew; one happened when my wife was backing her van out of the driveway and the other when it was sitting in a parking lot i.e. it is possible that there is negligible underlying damage whatsoever. I would check the fluids. I would also check the frame and under the carpet for rot. If they allow you to test drive it, run it up highway speeds, through some curves and stick it in 4H and 4L to make sure everything works there too. (When you do the latter, avoid turns on dry pavement.) Personally, I would not shy away from a '99 with 106k if all of the above things look good.

I'm not sure about the spare. I don't see many that are missing them. Maybe the PO didn't have enough cash for a fifth big tire...?

Sure, the seller will look you in the eye... as he lies straight to your face. If anyone on this forum thinks every private seller is a sinless soul with only your best interest in mind, clearly you haven't dealt with very many people.

Anyway, back to the Jeep in question. This TJ has the Dana35 and 3.07 gears (unless they've been changed, which isn't likely). That makes me want to shy away from it... except that it isn't Intense Blue like the ad states--it's Deep Amethyst. If you like unusual colors as much as I do, that's a big plus.

I'd do my due diligence on any sale, private or dealer. Research what you are interested in and know what you are looking for and you should be OK. The Ford Triton V10 engine series, like what is in my motorhome, has known issues with snapped exhaust manifold bolts and spitting spark plugs out of the heads (the V8s do too). That didn't stop me from purchasing it, knowing what the root causes were. I did get surprised by the OPDA issue with the '05 and '06 I6 engine, but it looks manageable and knowing then what I know now I wouldn't have changed my mind about purchasing my '06.

Thanks for all the replies, already.
I was wondering about the gears, too. It has 30" tires with 3:07 gears. It seems it would still be Ok for take off/ highway, etc. BTW- I am going to use it as a daily driver, as I only commute 14 miles round trip daily.

Ok...I'll give you a little advice. I've been in the auto business for 14 years, yes a stealership. Did you look at the carfax? 7 owners and an accident, been on the east coast. Keep looking.

Funny to read some of the comments.

BTW, it is illegal for a dealer to lie about any known problem with a car. But a private seller can lie through his teeth. Does this make dealers all honest? No.

You can also go back to a dealer and bitch. Very hard to do with a private party.

Hmmm,, you crack me up. . It's all about reading ones character when making/ closing a deal. Car salesman are pros, they succeed in salesmanship because they are paid very well to mask their character. The lay salesman, ie - private owner, is not a professional, and their character, good or bad, shines through, loud and clear. For you to assume that I haven't dealt with many people,, just makes me LOL. .

I agree. Thanks for all the input here, guys. I live in a rural town on Rt.66 and have dealt with many car dealers, so that I'm not worried about.
The Carfax shows 3 owners had it less than a year, two of those who had it 3mo. or less. 2 owners had it a year and 2 had it over several years. It appears to be nice inside and out for a 1999 model. I will check for rust issues, 4wd issues, and run it through a car wash to check the top. The low mileage for a 99 model seems like a plus. I've been looking around and many are newer with 150K + and still are selling for more $$.
I'd still like to hear about any mods that are noticeable to the naked eye and if the gearing and tire size are suitable for highway driving without rapping the bitch out. if I can get 15mpg city, then I am fine with that. I still have a sheeple transport (regular car) to take on long interstate journey's, too. Cheers!

Sounds like a blessing in disguise that the first one got sold. It was a p.o.s in my opinion. Do you have a link to the jeep you are looking at now?

Alright, I had to change the properties of the pix he emailed me. So, here are a few he sent.
He's asking $11,200, but said he would drop to $10,000 minimum. He has a new baby & wife and needs a family vehicle, now.
No links because it is a local sale in a trader mag.
I am now glad the bastard dealer stiffed me because this one looks kick ass! Hopefully going to be able to look at it this weekend, but with Easter and family visiting, maybe not until early next week. BTW- It's a 5 speed. I put on my "man of the house" pants and they still fit. lol

Did he refund the cash deposit you had given him to hold the car for you?

Offer him 8, ya never no, cash in hand speaks volumes, you may get it for 9.. Sherpa, I see where youre going with that question, of course the dealer is under no obligation to a prospective buyer unless a deposit was made, it's just a matter of principal, and used car salesmen are without it.

That's not a bad looking jeep. I think it has quite a bit going for it. How many miles are on it? As Rubicondon said I would offer less. Money talks.

Looks to be a very nice Jeep, it even has the very desireable/much stronger optional rear Dana 44 axle. The steering worries me a tad due to how it was upgraded. When you test drive it, make it a point to drive it at speed over some bumps and dips in the road without slowing down too much and see if the steering wheel is forced left/right as the suspension moves up/down over the bumps/dips in the road. If it does, that is called "bump steer" which is undesireable though easily fixed by a change or two in the steering system that isn't difficult.

Looks like a pretty nice Jeep!

Man, you all are rough on newbies.
It was mainly the principal. HE emailed me to set the appointment and the Jeep was a drive for me to look at and he knew this. He had no issues getting right back to me when I was a potential buyer, but then he cant even send an email stating it had sold? I would have been pissed if I would have drove all the way there for nothing.
It's all good because the '01 looks much better and is a single owner. Plus some sales schmuck doesn't get my commission money.
I'm new to Jeeps and want to delve into this world, as my other mistress (below) is much different than a 4x4, so this is a whole different ballgame for me.
Thanks again to all who have helped and commented. I'll keep ya posted on my Jeep journeys. Peace!!

Rough? Really? Allow me to call your attention to post #5 in this thread. That's the one where I went out to the ad you posted, copied the VIN and odometer, then logged into my Chrysler account (because, as it happens, I am a car salesman at a large Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Kia/Subaru/Suzuki/used autoplex), plugged in the VIN and odometer, scanned through the Jeep's equipment listing, then posted a few of the pertinent highlights for you to read. I did all this to provide you with additional information that (a) the ad/photos didn't show and (b) the salesman in question probably couldn't have told you even if you had asked him.

That guy clearly dropped the ball by not informing you of the sale, but you can't exactly blame the dealership for selling a vehicle when someone else walks in ready to buy it. Inside tip: many people who set firm appointments to see/buy a car fail to show up.

Don't get me wrong: I want you to find a great deal on a killer TJ. I think everybody ought to own a Jeep, and there is no car I enjoy selling more than a Wrangler. (Over the years, I have often taken customers out 'wheeling in their Jeeps just to help them get into the hobby. Seriously.) I really am hoping everything works out for you.

I clearly owe you an apology for lumping you in with all the fly by night used car salesmen. I found a sales guy, some 25 years ago, that far exceeded any expectations. I haven't found one since, and have become a customer that searches for price only, with no loyalty to any one dealership.. What state are you located in? Too bad you don't sell VWs , as soon as the new beetle comes equipped with a TDI, we will be in the market.... I agree, no one was rough on the newbie,, Lateron!!

Don't sweat it. I am keenly aware that my occupation is filled with people that you (and others in this thread) have described. Courtesy, honesty and professionalism seem to have all but disappeared from the sales business, and that makes me sad. On the plus side, this fact makes it easy for a few of us to stand out from the crowd.

There may have been a gentle tease, but that was about it, at least as far as my input was concerned. I certainly hold no ill will toward him (or anyone else on this forum).

When I bought my Jeep off of Craigslist, I hired a mechanic to do a full inspection for $140 before I bought it. I paid $6,000 for my 2003 TJ X with peace of mind.

I think that is a good idea. Naturally, you can only really do this when you are serious. But if you at your cards right, the mechanic most certainly found something that you can deduct from the price.

There is no spare tire because the tailgate hinges are most likely shot from the weight of the spare tire! When you go to the dealership ask the salesman to open the rear tailgate for you. I can almost guarantee you that it is locked so that there is no tailgate sag present.

Not sure if its been said, but make sure the lift is done right. IMO I would never buy a jeep already lifted. Not that I don't trust the work they did. I just trust myself more than a guy that I just met.
