Newbie Needs Help Bucket List Question

I'm a new member looking to fulfill a bucket list item. Have two children in high school, have wanted a jeep all my life however life's realities always made it a dream instead of an option. Was diagnosed with a brain tumor 2 years ago, have undergone radiation and chemo treatment for last 20 months. Have a 50 50 chance of dying of heart attack in my 70's which is a major improvement from original diagnosis. Thanks God for National Institute of Health.

Anyways I'm now looking to fulfill my dream of owning a Wrangler! Been doing the research, want something used that I can build/project. I've found a 2001 Wrangler Sport Hard Top in great condition, low miles, ect for a great price. I've always wanted a soft top!

Question: Can the hard top be easily converted to soft top and vs versa?? I know new models out the door could be equipped that way but what about after market???

Thanks to all who reply and looking forward to being active in the forum.

An easy solution would be to sell the hard top and replace it with a frameless top such as the bestop trektop nx which comes with all required hardware for install all for $5-600. Overall you should probably walk away with some extra cash for other mods since hard top in good condition should sell $500-1000.

Are you looking to keep the hard top once you get a soft or sell the hard? You could run a bikini top underneath the hardtop. But once you take the hardtop off you'd have to reinstall the soft top. There's many videos on YouTube for the process if you want to see how easy/hard it is.

Kris, I run both the hardtop and a soft top on my 1999 (basically same as a 2001) Converted easily is kind of a loaded question. It probably takes me about an hour to remove the hard top and reinstall the soft top brackets and top (I use a Bestop), but I only do it twice a year. It's not a very hard job, but unless you have a hoist, taking the hard top off is much easier with two people.

Glad to hear things have gotten better medically for you...welcome to the forum.

I'll run both tops also I have a factory hardware soft top, I have a hard top hoist in my garage so it probably takes me about a half hour to switch tops.
If the Jeep you're looking at was a factory hardtop only Jeep it may not have any of the hardware you would need to run factory style soft top (brackets on the b-pilar rollbar for the bows and the tailgate bar retainer clips). You might want to check into that, if you wanted to go soft top you can go witha frameless soft top like Bestop trextop...
