Talking Newbie Question

Hello folks! I'm new to the wrangler world, or should I say will be new to the wrangler world. I have had 3 Cherokees in my family, two of which had 200,000 + miles when sold and I currently have one with 181,000 miles that still runs like a champ.

I recently moved to Florida ( not retired, I'm not old) and it my time to get a wrangler to have my fun in. I'm looking at a used one because I already have a car payment on my wife's car etc etc etc.

My question to you guys is, do I go with a nice used "florida car" Wrangler X and then put on bigger rims and tires, an exhaust, tow hitch, you know minor things to make the jeep look beefier over time or wait and save up more $$$$ and try to find a Rubicon that's not out of line in price ( which most are here)

Got my eye on a 2006 4.0 manual with 84,000 at this car dealer near me. It is a true Florida car with no rust at all underneath from what I could see with the few minutes I had to look under there. Today they are asking 14K when I looked it was 13,450. LOL . I will deal with them when I have a down payment in hand but before I do, I wanted to ask you folks that question.

Don't know much about Wranglers except for the 4.0 motor which after having 3 in the family and do all the weekend warrior stuff myself on them, think its a fantastic motor.

Thank you very much. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PS. Who ever had it before they traded it in, took off those bumper corners, I think the front bumper looks better but I think it takes away from the rear. Normally I wouldn't care but my wife will be driving this from time to time so it's got to be pretty.

Joe

First Joe, I have to say your state has some of the best highways I've ever driven on. I just came back from a week in Florida to see my son graduate from a commercial dive school and your worst roads are better than the best roads in my part of California. They are smooth!

Florida's pretty flat without much of the type of terrain that the more expensive Rubicon was designed for, I'd say you'll be better off building up a standard Wrangler TJ (like the X) which would be less costly too.

Good year. Miles are also good for the age. Build you own. Once you own it, you will catch the fever and change things anyway. Go for it! Test it shifting in and out of 4WD to be sure it is moves freely.

For sure it's dangerous but he's got a good head on his shoulder and he's been diving since he was 14. He is actually now on an oil platform in Louisiana working out of Houma two weeks after graduating. He had a job offer two days before graduating, there's a lot of demand for the top grads.

Lived in Thibidaux. Worked out of Morgan City. Cal Dive International. Hard work but a lot fun too. Great people. There are still times when I wish I didn't get out of the business. I'm sure he will be fine and do very well.

Joemascis, sorry for hijacking your thread.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Welcome!

I agree with Jerry. Stick with a TJ or LJ and build it to suit your usage.

Well it turns out the trade in car dealer left out a small bit of information on his web ad. There is NO AC UNIT in the 2006 TJ !! Kind of a hard sell here in South West Florida where the feel like temperature has been over 100 every single day sense early June.

So I'm back on line trying to find me another one.

As I called him to tell him I was on my way to look and drive it, his reply(this morning) was, "well the earlier the better cause it's going to be hot".

My reply " Wait the jeep doesn't have AC? " "No sir, came from the factory like that. never had it, however I could put one in for you for about 2 grand."

I hate car dealers.

So add in the two grand for AC and its right back up there between 15 and 16 grand anyways. 84,000 miles and 8 going on 9 years old. Still needs rims and tires.

Still not the worse deal but I've seen others on line that look better.

I guess he's hoping some kid buys in and turns it into a mud truck or something. Seriously South Florida and no AC????? I'm surprised they let it out of the factory like that.

I work for a rental car company. A few years back we bought a bunch of base Wranglers without AC. Got a great deal. We primarily used them only in the Northeast but some of them found their way south. We would ship them back up the coast via one-way rentals.

I can't imagine living here in SoCar without AC! No way!

As a South Floridian, you would be insane to get ANYTHING without AC.
I bought my 2010 JK with AC and 36,000 miles for around 19,000.
There is really nothing but mud down here so, all of the goodies on the Rubicon are really mostly a waste of money. the 4:11 gears will actually piss you off as a daily driver.
If you can, look around the Boca Raton area. lots of rich college kids with more money then brains and they end up selling for way below what they put into them.
