Newbie question about hard and soft tops?

Alright I've read about them somewhat.

I know soft tops need replacing every few years and hard tops don't, but when you take the hard top off you need somewhere to put it.

So I'm wondering, when you have a soft top and want to take it off, is it like a zipper or something? Can you just unzip it, remove it, and tuck it away? Then put it back on?

I'd be nervous about leaving the top off when I was parked somewhere for an extended period of time. Is that normal?

Check out my profile pics I have a hard top and a soft top but also the cargo net top which I like more than the soft top. Theres pros and cons about it all. the soft top has fold down hinges that cause it to pivot off of the roll bars and it goes down like a convertable and rests between your spare and your rear bars on your tailgate. I find that the cargo top deters the theives as I have not been robbed yet (darn kids are probably out there as we speak).

I was nervous about leaving the top off at first, too. But, after spending all summer with both the doors and the top off my nerves have been calmed - not saying nothing will happen.

just don't keep anything valuable in it. keep the center console and the glove compartment locked nothing anywhere else (can be impractical..I know). Not looking forward to moving back where there will be drunk kids everywhere at all times can't say how many times ive come back to my gas cap unscrewed

And that's why I invested in a locking cap. The last thing I need is something in my gas..

My 99 has the original soft top. Windows have scratches and scuffs, but other than that it does not need replacing.

You can replace just the windows on a softop as they zip out and are fully removable. I dont keep anything in the Jeep and usually have the doors off just the bikini top on, the only thing I worry about is someone putting the parking brake down and putting the trans in neutral so the jeep rolls into another car lol.
