Newby question. Downsizing my tires from 35's to 33's?

Just bought a TJ last month and the tires are ready to be changed. There's not a ton of tred left on them, and I'm thinking of going with 33's instead of 35's.

I believe I have a four inch lift on it at the moment, but the guy never told me and I don't know how to figure it out. (again I'm new to all this).
Is there a way to figure out my lift?

Will I need to change anything to make my 33's fit where the 35's were?

Anyone know of a good, all around smooth riding tire? I'm not one for climbing rocks or going mudding every other day. I would just like a good, reliable tire when hunting season rolls around.

Any tips/advice would be appreciated.

Post a picture of your springs and a side profile of your jeep and we might be able to help. And 33's is a good choice if you want to downsize. They're cheaper and your gas mileage will improve You should be just fine with going to 33's. If anything it'll make your jeep last longer.

I always hear people talking about slapping 35s on a 4 inch suspension lift. All I can say is I have 33s and a 4" SL , and if I had 35s it would be RUB CITY.

So yeah I would go with the 33s

Thanks guys that's what I was thinking. The gas mileage improvement probably won't be much, but I'll take anything I can get.

Once I find a good time to get out of the office, I'll go out and snap a couple photos.

BFG all terrain ta are great tires if you are not in the mud. Decently quiet and lots of tread life.
Goodyear duratracks seem to get allot of praise as well, but i haven't tried them myself.

That appears to be a 4" to me, but other people are more than welcome to chime in on that one. 33's will fit just fine in there and the 33's won't rub offroad and you'll get more flex out of it because you can do less bumpstop.
As a tire suggestion, my friend runs bfg at's on his jeep and they are smooth riding. But not many people brag about their offroad performance. The other tire that is very popular on this forum is the goodyear duratrac. I personally went with the goodyear mtr w/ kevlar but I really liked them they are an aggressive tread, not too loud on the road, and if you run them around 26-28 psi on the road they should last a long time. And they aren't too rough of a ride in my opinion. But I'm 20 with a young back too so probably not the best judge of that. Haha but they are also a popular tire with many people.

Do you have the 32rh automatic? Did the previous owner re-gear the Jeep to handle the 35's? More often than not, people throw a lift on, and big tires without re-gearing the Jeep. So, there is a good chance you will not have any problems with downsizing as far as gears are concerned.

And it will look fine. For an A/T tire: GY Duratracs, Falken Rocky Mt., or BFG's are all good choices.

I'm not extremely sure to be honest. Will 33's make my ride smoother?
It seems like with the 35's every time a hit a bump, my head hits the hardtop. I'll be probably check out discount tire to get an estimate at lunch and do some research tonight.

What year is your TJ and what engine do you have? We can tell you what transmission you have with that info if you want to know

Sounds good! It's a 98' TJ with an inline V6 engine.

Auto or manual? And it's just an inline 6. Can't be both a inline and V configuration. Just for future reference

Tire pressure and shocks will have more to do with ride smoothness, than size of the tire. Most all tire shops will over-inflate large tires on our Jeeps without thinking about how light they are. Assuming your tires have over 30 psi of pressure in them, it will make for a very rough ride. I run about 22-25 psi on the road.

Ohhh I get it now! My dad's the mechanic in the family, and I still just hold the flashlight. I'm eager to learn about all this though!

That's a good point. I'll check the psi when I get home and more than likely let some air out.

Ok. You have the 32rh 3 speed auto tranny. Post up what your rpms are while you are traveling down the hiway at 60mph with those 35" tires. If it's screaming, it has been re-geared. Dropping down to 33's will make it worse.

Another way to tell what gears you have is with the tires off the ground, turn a tire one full turn and count how many times your driveshaft turns.

Yep. TJDave is right on all accounts. But as long as you have the 4.56 or 4.88 gears I think you'll be ok with 33's. 4.56 is optimal with 33's with the auto though.

When I'm driving the interstate around 60 mph the rpm's are roughly 2500. I know when I'm pushing 70-75 They are right around 2900. I don't let them go over 3000.

Also, when to discount tire and got a quote for roughly $1400 for new wheels and tires. Discount my ***. Yikes. I might just look for used, that are still in good condition.

Well if you are getting Goodyear just order the tires straight from Goodyear. That's what I did. Saved me like $100-$200 I think. Then bring them to the shop to be put on. And I don't have the auto so I can't comment on the RPM and possible gears. But the easiest way would be to just jack it up and have a friend watch the tire or turn the driveshaft

Yokahama geolander ats have been my goto tire. On my 2nd pair now. Good looks, very good on-road ride, not as good as bfs off road but still comparable. Take a look at em because they are generally cheaper too.
